legal tender, Scottish notes v's English ones.

In this day and age why are folk still carrying cash?

Can't remember the last time, on making a purchase, using plastic wasn't acceptable...

Cash is no longer king!

About the only time I use cash nowadays is to leave a tip when eating out...

what do you do if out on the lash?? this is the only time i carry cash, and no doubt why my good lady had it.

Will be out tonight and will be getting cash out on the way into town.

Pay contactless , welcome to 2018 lol

I hate using cards and will not do contactless. As a person of a certain age I like to know how much money I have to spend. If I withdraw a particular amount per week I can budget, whereas if i use a card all the time I forget how much I've spent and it's only when you check your balance that you realise you have spent more than you thought.
Plastic only encourages you to overspend and before you know it, if you're not careful, your cards are maxed out and you have massive debts.
Perhaps it's "Old School" thinking, but I've never been in debt apart from a mortgage, and if you have a limited income then you have to be careful.

Virtually all my pupils pay cash.
I could get a card reader but would have to up my fees to pay the charges...
I'll be paying my club subs in cash next week!!

apparently paypal card readers arent too bad cost wise.. its 2.75% so every pound you loose under 3p

£50 would be £1.375 fee not bad

Plastic only encourages overspending in the old school world (no offence meant by this) I mean I have a few bank accounts.. when im paid I put X amount into one account for golf
X in another for my petrol
X in another for spending money for the month

anyways I keep up with my apps so soon as I spend I know how much is left straight away

so yes contactless etc encourages overspending but thats only if you dont use the modern apps to go with it which a lot of people dont (understandably)

Yes, obviously; that's why I'm mortgage free, loan free save one 0% deal for the motorcycle, and my credit card is cleared monthly whilst my younger colleagues and family members are maxed out on their credit cards and perpetually plead poverty. And I manage to do all that whilst being app-free as well!! :D

As dumb a statement as I've read on here which takes some doing; congratulations.

Well, I don't do 'out on the lash' so much these days...
However all the pubs/bars I still frequent, in these parts, have card readers on the bar...
So can't really see the issue...
Never come across a licensed establishment that gives discount for cash..

Sorry but you have complete missed the point. Only if people use it correctly does it work

I could max out my credit cards. I don’t
I could have loans for everything . I don’t
I’m 30 and only debt I have is my mortgage .. how old are you exactly? Hardly comparable if your in your 50s when I plan to be mortgage free (even with upping it to extend the loft)

If you actually read what I’ve said properly and if you use all the systems available together to plan your finances you can use contactless etc without overspending .. and know exactly how much you have left each day

I’m not saying it works for everyone. Cash doesn’t work for me.

I’d say try doing what you did back then now in the modern times with house prices what they are now and then it’s comparable

might be fine down there, but not sure Macallum, the Market bar and Lauders would do if you didn't have cash. I'm sure a couple of posher places might, but most just don't. in the bars of Inversneck cash is still king

I use cash and card, like to have a couple of hundred for the unexpected, probably over kill to be honest.
Remember been in Oxford and my Dad filled in the hire car with fuel and the garage wasn’t going to take Scottish money, soon changed his mind when my Dad said that’s all he’s got, take it or leave it 😂😂

Can l be the first person in this thread to point out that Scottish bank notes are not legal tender. Not even in Scotland. They are a legal currency - but that is not the same thing... (Legal tender is a strange concept but basically if you offer to pay a debt in legal tender, then the creditor is obliged to accept it payment, or else the debt is considered settled

As point of information, there is now no paper money that is legal tender in Scotland - the last note to be so was the English pound note until it got withdrawn. I believe that Scotland is unique in the world - in being the only country that only has coinage as legal tender.

Having said that, because Scottish notes are legal currency, they are, and should be equally acceptable as currency in England as in Scotland

I'm quite capable of reading properly, thank you. Your point was that the only way to avoid overspending with contactless cards is by using apps. And as I've pointed out to you, I know plenty of people who have all the apps and who overspend, and plenty of people without all the apps who don't overspend, which somewhat blows your theory out of the water.

The key to not overspending as far as I'm concerned is not apps; it's self discipline, something sadly lacking in some of the people I meet. Older people learnt different ways to deal with money and had a different attitude to spending & borrowing which mean that a lot of us don't need, or want, plastic and apps. Might have been nice if you had acknowledged that rather than your insulting & sweeping dismissal of the old school ways that have served many of us quite nicely & continue to do so.

As regards paying your mortgage off, I'd say try doing back then on the interest rates that we had to deal with in the old school world.

old school interest rates on much lower mortgages though ? its swings and roundabouts..

I could pay my mortgage off tomorrow if I choose to move.. just sell my house in the London Borough of havering and move to somewhere a bit cheaper and my equality would be able to move mortgage free..

id wager my mortgage repayment is higher now at a lower rate than yours would have been when interest rates were high..

the world has firmly changed.. its not ness for the better but it cant be compared with the past because its too different

I have had problems in the past with Scottish money in England, but as people have said, there were a lot of fakes going round in the past so some places would refuse them on that grounds, which is annoying but understandable.

Mind you if Wee Jimmy gets her way, in 2020 you will all be using the Euro so you won’t be able to spend that either.

In retail a few decades when we were issued with those detector pens to score a line over notes to try and spot fakes.... I always remember thinking if I had the wherewithal to make funny money then I'd have another machine right next to it making fake detector pens that I'd distribute to all the shops and pubs!

Can you blame English retail units from not wanting to take Scottish notes?
Many don’t like taking £50 notes simply because of forgery issues, so is it any surprise that rarely seen Scottish notes may not always be taken?

Best answer would be to just abandon separate Scottish notes, I mean we all are supposed to be a United Kingdom................

Yup, Bank of United Kingdom notes, I'm all for that, put me down for a handful of those bad boys please

Just paid for a evening in the bar and dinner in Lancs with a bundle of McNotes.

They didn't bat an eyelid.

Sorry to disappoint

Nobody said it was commonplace. Rare to be turned down but with larger notes it may happen once in a blue moon. Less likely now with modern note checkers but still a possibility.
