Firstly, this is not meant to be a thread where everyone gets angry and nasty.

Whilst watching Strictly Come Dancing, my Mum said:

"I can't believe Andy Murray's mum got through!"

To which I replied:

"I guess all the Scottish viewers are voting for her?"

In the X Factor, Louis Walsh always says (to the relevant act):

"You've got the whole of Ireland / Scotland / Wales voting for you" and "Wales / Ireland / Scotland, pick up the phone and vote for (name)".

Is all that true? As a southern English fellow, I never really feel the need to support someone who is English in these shows (possibly because there is not one person from England but many) and would possibly only vote for someone who I knew or was from my local community (although, I never waste money on voting so even then...) if I felt the need.

I guess I'm saying that I never feel the need to support someone English, is it different for Scottish / Irish / Welsh people or is it all TV hype?

Lifetime Michael Schumacher supporter meaning I was a non McLaren/Williams/Damon Hill supporter. I like lots of the US golfers, Phil, Tiger, Bubba (bit less this year) and so on. Nope, I do it on skill or personality but nationality does not really come into it for me.

But would you support someone to win something solely on the basis they are from your country?

Yes im patriotic so I will usually support my fellow countryman against any other unless they give me good reason not to.

I await one of the forum nutcases appearing to call me a daily mail reading Racist any moment now :D

I have to like the person first off. I was pleased Kaymer won this year, seems a nice bloke and Stenson coming back is also good news in my book. They beats Brits but that didn't bother me. In non golfing areas I like local people to do well as you feel you can relate to them a little. However if I don't like the manner of the person then it doesn't matter where they come from. I don't have that English feeling that the Celtic nations seem to have, eg vote for a Scot/Welsh/Irish person, which is what I think you are asking. I think the English will have a regional leaning rather than a country driven bias.

With regards to Judy Murray my wife is convinced that people are voting for Anton rather than her. I would never argue with her so it must be true

As a rule of thumb, I will always tend towards the British sportsman/team etc, unless there is a reason not to.

The last time I remember this being an issue was getting a lot of flack for wanting David Haye not to win against Klitschko, really don't like the guy, and wanted him to get shown up. A l few people didn't like that I wasn't supporting the Brit!

I watched her 'routine' on 8 out of 10 cats last night, how that can be classed as dancing I'll never know. Don't even know why she's actually on it?

Anyway I tend to support British teams or players like I have done during these Euro qualifying matches but as regards to 'talent' shows, I couldn't care less

If I was interested in whatever was being played for I would support an English competitor over one from another Country unless I particularly lime the other person. But if I have no real interest in it, like boxing for example, I couldn't care less.....

She will be getting paid a few thousand smackaroonies for her efforts.

I would to an extent, but not as a rule.

Rugby, I'll shout on Scotland no matter what.

Football, I couldn't give a monkeys if Scotland get beat and have been known to shout on the opposition on occasion (nowt against the team, just the support in general).

Golf, I like to see the Scots doing well but I'm usually happy to see the best player win regardless of nationality.

Athletics, UK competitors get my support no matter what (Scots get my support if not competing as UK, but I'll also shout on English, Welsh and N Irish too).

Tennis, I like to see Murray win but I'm also happy to see Djokovic winning.

Boxing, it would depend on the competitors and not nationality.

Women's beach volleyball, I'll shout on whoever has the nicest backside, England's Zara Dampney ensuring UK support at the Olympics, although one or two others were the lucky recipients of my support.:D

Talent shows, I don't watch them and wouldn't encourage them by voting.....although an exception was made for BEZ in celeb BB once.:o

Will,depend on the sport

Rugby , Cricket , etc will support England

Football - don't support England

When it comes to Olympics will support GB

But when it comes to tournaments always like to see the home nations do well

Golf - Europe in Ryder Cup and will support any european in majors

Tennis - any GB player

Daily Mail reading racist....

For most things I'd probably like it more if someone from the UK won, but that does not come at the expense of 'hating' whoever they are playing and wishing ill on them.

Nothing wrong with supporting your home team/nation, but it is a problem when people then dislike/hate/abuse someone or some team, just because they are not a team you support. Having said that at football I tend to go the other way and support whoever England are playing. ;)

It depends on the sport. If its football I'll always support a home nation team or country against overseas opponents and will always support England whenever they play whatever the sport. In individual sports I'm not too fussed and always cheered the likes of Murray, Hoy, McIlroy etc. when they've had a chance of glory

Team sports always support England. Like the home nations to do well to as generally think we all provide good atmospheres at major tournaments.

Individual sports I support players I like and appreciate. Nationality doesn't matter.

I wouodnt nit nit support someone because of their country either.

Ryder cup I support europe. Olympics don't interest me much tbh but like us to do well.

They will always get my support if they are Scottish, or any other British lad or lassie competing against johnny foreigner

That is of course, up until they open there mouth and you realise that they are an absolute whopper

At which point they no longer receive any support. Just pelters

:D

Yep I agree, generally I don't care where a person comes from. However in a two person contest I'd probably support the English competitor but not always and only if I thought he/she was a good bloke/girl..
