legal tender, Scottish notes v's English ones.

Had a call from the wife today, who is spending a few days in London visiting a friend. she took a few hundred quid down as pin money, just for a few drinks etc. Nowhere would except Scottish notes and even banks refused to change them as its seen as money laundering!!!!!

In theory, Scottish notes are only legal tender in Scotland and not England , and vice versa with BOE notes in Scotland, but I've never seen anyone refuse to except English notes up here.

BoE notes are legal tender everywhere in the UK I think. Official advice is that Northern Irish and Scottish notes are only accepted by people who would know how to spot fakes and there’s an agreement to accept them in all banks.

I've had mixed receptions when spending in England. In Liverpool etc there is no problems but when you head to Evesham or other central areas they have the fear. One post office/newsagent point blank refused while the local Tesco metro had two members of staff on, one scowled and made funny shapes with their mouth and buzzed their boss who was only too happy to take it.
My tip is to withdraw money from the likes of a Halifax ATM before travelling for cash as they give BOE notes. I do think it has to change though., We take all notes in UK, as to Scotland so should England and Wales.

That I understand, and probably is covered under the money laundering - could she not find a branch of her bank?

I’ve only had one issue using Scottish notes in England, started when the young member of staff didn’t know there were different notes in Scotland, and thought it was something I knocked up... then the Manager tried to say it was a fake, but couldn’t tell me why it was fake, a firm conversation later they had accepted it.

"legal tender" is a bit of a misleading term. Scottish notes are legal currency throughout the UK.

I've had a few arguments over them in my time. Best is when they decline them after you've eaten your meal or arrived at your destination... "take it or leave it pal, it's all I've got" - they tend to accept them then.

From my experience retailers in the UK don’t seem to want to accept as they have little or no knowledge of what they look like as there are a few different types and don’t want to get caught out with fakes etc.

Banks will accept but we require you to be a customer as we need to log every transaction for audit purposes and for money laundering too.

I’m surprised post offices wouldn’t change them.

Never had a problem with Scottish notes in England in recent years.
Places like Yorks, Hants, Wilts, Glos, Berks. only too happy to take them.

I have not been in London for 25 years, or likely ever to go again, so I don't know about there.

Like Sainthacker, where I work is as far as you can get from Scotland but they happily take them as do our bank when I do banking

I think it's reasonable to assume these people haven't seen Scottish notes before and therefore were unsure as to how real they were.
I've been paid cash almost exclusively for the last 15 years and I haven't seen one down here, in fact I think the last time I saw one was when I was in the MoD in the 80's....
I can understand the banks unwillingness for the reasons above.

I'm hopeful that you are joking but even if you were I am still offended by this statement. I can't stand the small minded attitude of some people from Scotland.

I'm British but born and bred in Scotland. I do not hate people from England, far from it as they are from my country.

If the England football team do make it to the world cup I'll be supporting them.
