Laser or GPS?

Wow, great prices on both of those and £30 whats thats, half a night out? I knew the G3 was available on Tesco for that price but the laser for £99 looks great.

I could be wrong, but I think thecraw had that brand of laser and said nothing but good things about it.

Same as Murph, I'm lazy, but I now have a trolley with a USB port so use both. I mostly use the laser especially inside 150, but the GPS just hangs on the side of the bag so is easy to take a quick glance at when I'm not so close.

What course would that be on Mike:whistle:

I tend not to limit it to one course and will use them on any course I play, like I said longer shots or tee shots I use the GPS and for the scoring clubs the laser is used. Would seem strange to only use them at one course.

Was tongue in cheek Mike, just wondered where you play but no biggie if you want to keep it quiet.

your correct the craw and chris661 had nothing but good things to say about these lasers same brand but i bought the 500 in white (OCD strikes again  ) and i would have no problem recommend them or hotgolf where mine came from too.

I have a Hillman laser which is very good but earlier this summer I bought a Garmin G3. The laser now lives in the boot of my car.

The laser was good but it can be difficult to locate the flag on distances of 150 yards+. It was also a bit of a faff to keep taking it out of the case on each shot.

The Garmin clips onto my trolley and it only takes a few seconds to look at and gives a lot more info. You can also move the cursor to pick a lay up point and it does all the maths for you - distance to lay up point then remaining distance to the flag.

I'm not sure why anyone not at pro level would need an exact yardage to the flag but you can drag and drop the flag icon on the Garmin around the green to give a more accurate yardage.

You can also use it in preview mode so you can look at new courses before you play them.

All in the Garmin at £120 has been a bargain. It threw a wobbly once and wouldnt list any courses but a quick connection to the garmin website sorted that.

It can eat batteries though. I get about 4 rounds out of a set but if you buy a big pack of Duracells in Costco they are not too bad.

Most of us have smartphones which have built in GPS so just get the golf logix app for £15.
I love mine and I'm a few hundred quid better off.

No right or wrong answer, more a preference thing. I used GPS in the past but now use a laser. I use it for distances to trees, bunkers and other points as well as flags. For my money the Nikon lasers are better than Bushnell.

I've used both. For me, distance to pin is key, so I prefer Laser.

I'd recommend Laser for you too - as you don't really play enough away courses to justify the benefits of GPS over Laser.

You will know most distances in your home course anyway, so the focus should be on the shot to the green.

Laser is 'away course ready' too and doesn't require an annual sub - though there are plenty of GPS ones that don't either.

Try GPS on phone out in bounce games - but remember Phone GPS is not allowed in comps.

Just as side question, on a corporate day, something where a customer or account invites me to play with them, would a mobile be banned in these, there are always prizes and usually stableford.

i would check with the organisers, i havent played in a corp day that has banned them, but always check first! you dont want a DQ!

Im sure his "ghost" could confirm but I think you'll find the laser aint used as much as it used to be ;)

so is the garmin gps allowed in comps ? always thought they was not.

Yes Garmins are allowed in comps.

Lasers are but only if the measure distance only. If they are able to compensate distances for slopes or give any other info, e.g wind direction etc they are not allowed.

This is the reason Smart Phones are not allowed as they have other features which can be used (even if they are not)

One of the reasons for banning smart phones was that most have a compass app as standard.

Quite how using a compass on a golf course is supposed to help you I don't know!

Only at courses where the committee have passed a local rule allowing their use. That will be at the majority of clubs but there are some clubs that don't allow them, i'm sure Sunningdale wasn't mapped when I played there

A GolfBuddy Platinum GPS all the way. As others have already said there are limitations, either equipment or the golfer when using a laser.

All I need to know is distance to hazards, doglegs, and the middle of the green. Hang it on the trolley/bag strap and its ready when you need it.

Also there are no subscription charges and courses which aren't among the 40,000+ will be mapped in under 5 days. The 2 I have requested were both done in 2 days
