I've got about £150-£170 to spend on a gadget. What should I go for a Laser or a GPS unit. I mainly play at my home course with about 5-7 away days each year.
What recommendations can you make?

I like the idea of the watches, nice and simple but seeing ChrisD's laser was also good. Not sure I can get a laser for this budget.

GPS for me all the way. It depends what type of golfer you are I suppose and how you see your shots. I always like to know how far distances are to the front and middle of the green and carries over bunkers infront of greens as I always see my shots releasing out. The courses around here are all firm so personally I'm not going to drop and stop one within 15 foot of a pin.

Do a search, loads of good info on both but preference down to what you want as a player!

I just want F/M/B so basic GPS suits me perfectly

I don't get much spin on my shots so I do have to account for run out. I've been using a old SG4 (now dead) for a few rounds which gave FMB and hazards etc which helped and I liked using it. The laser gives more accurate readings though?

I think laser is more accurate. We've compared our GPS devices to lasers on a few holes at our place. I've got an SGX and it's the most accurate. The only bad thing is the yearly payments. But as I've always paid it I don't think about that now.

Personally GPS. A couple of the guys I play with use lasers and my GPS always agrees with the yardage but they can't use it when going over trees or doglegs. The advantage of a laser is it will give you an exact yardage to a flag but to be honest at our level that's not quiet as important but I have seen a several occasions when they haven't got the flag and shot miles out the back of the green.

I suppose it depends what sort of course you play.. Mine has no blind holes and you can always see some part of the flag from the fairway, so hardley ever can't get a distance.. i tend to use it most from 150 yards in where i want to be going straight for the flag. plus we have distance to front and middle onthe sprinkler heads every 10 yards or so down the fairway. But our greens are on the large side and there can be 30 -50 feet diff in distance from there.

So laser all day for me.

I would have a try with a laser 1st as some can't hold them steady enough! GPS for me, had a garmin g3 and it was excellent. Only got rid as I rarely play away and know my home course markers are spot on so rarely used it.

I have both in the bag but in the main I use the GPS as it takes less time and gives you all the info on the main screen, Bunkers water hazards etc. I only use the laser for my scoring irons 8 - lw

prefer the laser. on my home course the only thing i would want a yardage for is to a flag. i do like the skycaddie for collecting stats etc through the round, but for yardages, def the laser

i now have both i started with an SGX and its great for FMB and the rotating green feature is a big help, you can move the pin to approx location and it sits nicely on trolley for quick easy distances.
Also got a snooper 500 quality laser for £120 after a couple of recommendations on here.
So all in all there are benefits of both hence the advent of the hybrids but you have to get what suits you and thecourses you play best.
Laser isnt any use for blind shots.

I think I may go for a gps unit. The laser seems to be good for 100 yards in but in mot that accurate yet to slamming it in at the pins. I want to me more accurate with my mid-long shots.

Question is now, which one and where's the best price?

What course would that be on Mike:whistle:

Wow, great prices on both of those and £30 whats thats, half a night out? I knew the G3 was available on Tesco for that price but the laser for £99 looks great.

Got both, but use the laser the most. I'm lazy, and the GPS always needs charging. The batteries in the laser last 3 months, and I carry a spare. The GPS does 3 rounds, tops.

Looks like I've just bought a Laser finder! I'm going to flog my RBZ 3 wood to part fund it. GPS will come at the end of the month.
