Played in our medal today. Not playing well (lip outs, couple of silly holes) but not disasterously bad.

Walking to the 17, my mate turns to me and says, "you're in with a shout today, you're nett 56".

Stood over the ball to tee off, and I didnt want to hit it, anyway, last two holes - 16 (SIXTEEN) shots (no more detail can be given, its too painful) - blew it.

Would that have happened anyway or, was the thought of my score putting me off.

Anyway, trying to take the positives from the game. Changed my swing completely last week and today was the first run out and was generally quite pleased.

Is it bad luck to be told your score - does this/has this happened to anyone else?

I agree with you 100%!

I make a point of asking my playing partners in Medals not to tell me my score at any point until the last putt drops on the 18th!

It depends on the person I suppose, I know if I am playing a good round or not without knowing the exact score and can come in just as often with a great finish as a poor one, likewise if I am aware of the score throughout the round the same can happen.

I think that if you allow this knowledge to play on your mind then it will transfer to your play. Does knowing the score take control of you or do you take control of it and just play on? :D

How can you not know your score as you go round??! :D

Each to there own I suppose but I always know where I stand.
You are right, Dodger. I'm sure most golfers know their score as soon as the last putt drops. Only beginners and very high handicappers have to tot it up. (No disrespect intended, by the way, to high scorers).

This has happened to me 2 identicle rounds going down the 17th winning the compition by 6or7 shots and once threw it away because i knew this and once finsihed and won by 8 shots so it goes to show knowing your score can ruin your round.

thanks

It's all in the head. Like saying "I won't go in the lake this time" when you stand on the tee. Next thing........splash!
I don't like to know my exact score. I have a rough idea but would rather not know exactly.

I agree - how can you not know where you stand at any given point ? I know exactly where I am even if I do try not to think about it or let it affect me etc.

Possibly one of the downsides of NOT having too many shots to play with i guess, one of the hazards that comes as your handicap reduces.

Still, SIXTEEN shots on ANY 2 Holes is horrendous, get to your room and dont come out till called. :D

I know my score at all times because even if not marking a card, I come off each hole saying 1 over through 1 or say 2 over through 4, 6 over through 10 etc. I get confused when I get a birdie, it dont happen often :D

I think your mate should have kept quiet, I would'nt dream of telling anybody their score if they were doing well. You can guarantee that it will be the kiss of death if you do.

Whilst not adding to the pressure by saying what there score is, most of the guys I play with regularly know exactley where they are.

I break my round into three parts and know what I've done and what I need to do at any given point.

It's even more important to know on a bad day so you can scramble to make the buffer if necessary.

I like to know where i am in terms of my score. Today, I got 2 triple bogeys, but managed to keep to a +9 (gross) round, which isn't bad for me. I play well when i know i have to to save my round.

I know how you feel. Hit a great drive up the last which flirted with OB. Was then told I had ammassed 37 stableford points so far. Immediately tensed up and a further 6 shots.....BLOB! I was in with a shout of getting my handicap snipped as well.

Although I will always have a sense of how I am doing I think it important not to worry about your score as by doing so you are not "staying in the present", as advocated by Bob Rotella.
He tells a number of stories of golfers who have played well and then thought ahead of the next shot that they have to play, which has then caused them to tighten up and fall apart (including Arnold Palmer)

I always know my score. Makes no difference to me, unless I'm on a roll in which case I normally get more confident.

I generally know my score as I go round the course.

Going well this morning after a poor start-1 point after 2 holes got to 30 pts for 14 holes, then had 2 three putts in a row from within 20 feet on 15 & 16 then blobbed 17 & 18.
Bloody frustrating.
