Just booked the bi-annual trip to Kingsbarns for 2 weeks time, the princely sum of £85.00.Pricey but worth every penny imo.

dumb question, anyone played there recently, and is it in anything but magnificent condition? :D
 
I took a fly by during the Open and it looked in good nick and was swarming with folk,I am sure the starter said each day was solid from 5.30am to 5.30pm.....a lot of coin that!

I take it you are booked on the residents/S.G.U. rate?

Good grief it's £300 better. The Old Course is tradition and history, but not much of a course.

Kingsbarns on the other hand is simply fantastic.

Played there late May, and it was in stunning nick, and as noted above, jam packed from first light to last tee time.

(and P.S. not a jacket and tie in site ;))
 
Bob your havin a laugh, rather play Balbirnie again, its only got one decent hole, thats the 12th, what about the 14th a micky mouse hole or what.
 
Got to agree with Dodger on this one. Kingsbarns is nice, it's a good golf course however it just doesn't tick all the boxes for me. Some superb holes but a good few mediocre possibly even "poor" holes on KB.

I had heard so many rave reviews and reports about KB that I expected better however in my opinion it fell way short of a Machrihanish, Western Gailes & Turnberry.

I also believe (again, only my opinion!) that Castle Stuart was a better lay out than KB and I'd rather fill the car with diesel, drive up to Dornoch have a round there instead of KB for roughly the same price.

Apparently the guy who designed KB & CS said they learned from the mistakes of KB when building CS, so I can appreciatte you thinking along those lines (never played CS myself).

Don't agree with you on Dornoch though, for me that was the course with so many rave reviews etc, that when I got there, it just wasn't as good as I expected.

aye, £85.00 and £65.00 for any future rounds this season.

Golf courses are funny things and very personal.Is it better than the old course?For me, probably, but it's not as good as turnberry or even castle at st andrews.But it is very good and the last time i played there (off blacks) I went round 11 over, my handicap is 16 :D

One of the biggest disappointments in my 35 years of playing golf was discovering what a mediocre golf course the Old Course actually is. If it wasn't for the fact it is acknowledged as the 'home of golf' there is no way it would have ever made it onto the Open roster. Is Kingsbarns worth £35 more? In my opinion, yes, but that isn't to say I don't think both are overpriced. For half the price I'd recommend Dundonald and, if you aren't married to the idea of links golf, my personal favourite, Downfield, at £45.

Your pished, Downfield is a bog and robbery at £45, St Andrews is a fanatstic course,Kingsbarns a favourite of mine but the Old Course is better

Each to their own, I suppose. I can only assume you played Downfield in unusually poor conditions but every time I've played it it's been pristine - they don't use it as an Open qualifier for nothing. The great Peter Thomson lists it as one of his favourite courses and he's played some of the best in the world so If I'm 'pished' then at least I'm in good company.

As for St. Andrews, if you like fairways that are 60 yards wide and so dry a 24 handicapper could hit it 320 yards then I suppose it is a great course. Personally, I prefer a bit more of a challenge.
