Right, I had a fitting today at a local pro with a "good" reputation. I have been fitted for titleist AP2 irons and a new driver whatever that may be. Firstly He got his vector machine out which looked like a rickety little thing compared to the kit i saw at american golf. Following this the results it returned I think were not reliable at all. Previously at American golf my average carry from the driver was around 284 i think from what i remeber, however from his machine it was around 307 and i was swinging slower from the figures he quoted me. Something doesnt quite add up. He warned me off the taylor made, callaway was out the question, titleist was rubbish and ended up bashing a ping i15,, which to be honest i thought was AWSOMe and I nutted it! He also proceeded to state that the reason I hit it high is that I play the ball 2 inches back off my left heel with the driver? I thought this was correct. He proceeded to put the ball back to just in front of the middle of my stance. Once he did this my driving became like the red arrows! who actualy plays their driver this far back i felt like i was chopping wood!?

At the end of everything, including his bullying to try and get me to buy everything there and then I ended up with the following:

Titleist AP2 3-PW Project x 6.5 shafts
Ping i15 diver 9.5 tour stiff shaft

All together £998 - good quote? bad quote?

What handicap golfstick? 6.5 sounds a little stiff to me.
Sounds a little expensive to me. Did that include any fitting charges or discount etc?
Most pros who fit clubs usually negate any fitting price if you buy from them rather than get the spec sorted then sod off and buy elsewhere.

Firstly if you weren't happy with the fitting and his recommendation I'd have kept the credit card firmly in the pocket. It is up to you what make and model you buy and you shouldn't be railroaded into getting something just because the pro says so.

If the figures are that far out I'd go somewhere else and get an independant reading. Where in the country are you as there are loads of fitting centres that would give you a C/F session and offset the cost against any purchase.

If it was me I'd tell him you've had second thoughts and get him to at least put the order on hold

A set of those irons even with upgrade at their most expensive would cost £700.The driver would be £250 at full retail and if the shaft is the Avixcore that is a free upgrade.

So yeah quite expensive

Also odd he fitted you with 6.5's in your irons and only a stiff in the driver even with your huge carry

280+ carry is very very good, and AP2 irons are not for a high handicap what are you playing off?.

A good pro will give you a selection of irons and shafts. Once you have hit a fair few balls he can relay the data to you on teh screen and you are able to see for yourself what irons/shafts best suited you.

Once you have narrowed it down you can then test the once you like and see the results and most of all how you feel with this club. I like the AP2's but dont like the feel, once i was fitted i new what i wanted and shopped around for a cheaper deal. All a fitting is for is to let you know what you (need) should be using. Your free to pay your £45.00 fee and walk away with all the indo you need to get a bloody good price from someone else. (also the price seems very high) AP2's are a £499 set of iorns at best and the driver is £199/250... Please stop and check it all out.

I paid £480 for my AP2's 2 years ago, with 5.5 PX in, admittedly from a Proshop on Fleabay, but they DID have a serial which checked out with Titleist etc.
When I changed this year to my CB's, again from a Pro on Fleabay, I only paid £485 for the set, including a 2iron, and they had only been hit twice.

Assuming you pay a shop price, with a Driver only £250, you're £300 higher than you should be I think ?

i thought it was very expensive. The driver was to have a tour stiff shaft put in which apparently is as stiff as they do. I didnt buy them and I dont think il be going back without having a real good shop about. I could tell that he just wanted the sale by the end which made it really annoying tbh. On the other hand tho i do really like the Ping i15 it sits very nice at the ball. Im wondering whether it is worth waiting a while until newer kit comes out then buying it then? 7oo and odd quid for a set of irons really is breaking my bannk i never thought i would get near this

Cancel the order. It is too expensive and the whole thing sounds rather dodgy. The set you ordered should cost around £800.

To start with, an X shaft is not any more money in any decent make, and there are plenty of shafts available in that flex. A decent fitter can make it much stiffer than X if you want, at no extra cost. Tell Rory McIlroy that Titleist drivers are rubbish - he uses one.

If you carry the ball 307 yards, congratulations - you have a swing the same speed as Alvaro Quiros.

If you want Titleist irons, go to the Titleist custom fitting place at Brampton Park, Cambs. You sound like a good player, so if that is not convenient, Mizuno in Surrey might be another good choice, and you will get X shaft irons and woods at normal retail price. Or to a reputable independent fitter, several choices around too.

AP2 are great irons.

Last years model came with the Project X shafts. 2010 models now have stock Dynamic Gold shafts. Either you have a 2009 set or you have a custom 2010 set.

Seems a bit expensive but on the other hand if you start playing well with them he's done his job. Like you said he has a good reputation so perhaps give him the benefit of the doubt?

I'm currently in bolton for the next 2 weeks, moving back to newcastle afterward. I dont enter long drive comps lol, but I do hit the ball a reasonable distance, just didnt think i hit it that far which is why i am questioning it. He did say i had a tour speed swing tho what ever that means. I defo need the project x shafts as they gave me a much more penetrating flight, but as soon as that was established i think he thought he could get stupid money out of me. Atm i feel like i just need to find someone i can really trust to get this all done at the right price. Needless to say I didnt hand over a grand on the spot for them and i dont think i will be ordering them

Any pro who tells you that Titleist woods are rubbish is an idiot and should not be trusted. They are patemntly NOT rubbish and are played on Tour by a lot more players than play i15 woods. Therefore I would assume the rest of the fitting may be equally rubbish. Perhaps he has a financial reason for recommending these - maybe the margins are better on AP2s and i15s right now.

PX is a very solid shaft, and 6.5 is the most common flex played by Tour pros. Before getting fitted for such a strong shaft, I would get a second opinion. Did he try KBS? Did he try X100? Did he talk about soft or hard stepping?

I think you are literally getting shafted, so I would strongly recommend you cancel and go somewhere else.

Where are you based?

Im not convinced about being able to handle the x6.5 either especially wiht have 2 conflicting swing speed readings. However i did feel like i hit them well.

- this was never mentioned and I have no idea what any of this is lol. The only shafts mentioned were project x

PX is one of the shafts used by a lot of Tour players, but more of them use True Temper Dynamic Gold X100s, and an increasing number use KBS Tour. All have different flight characteristics and can be adjusted to subtle in-between flexes. For a player with very fast swing speed, a detailed fitting by a specialist is often helpful.

Soft stepping is a way of making the flex slightly softer, say to make an X flex play closer to an S flex. Soft stepping once usually takes off 1/3 of a flex. Hard stepping is the opposite.
