You could ask them if they have ever been in a cockpit before, seen a grown man naked, been to a Turkish prison or like movies about Gladiators.

I'm surprised clubs still feel the need to do this in the current climate but if them is the rules. It isn't a job interview and try and keep it informal and light. At the end of the day they want your money and providing you're aren't going to go on a rampage on the course or amok in the 19th it should just be a box ticking exercise. Ask whatever is on your mind. If they don't like it or are evasive, that would set alarm bells going in my mind

As someone who sits in on these so called interviews I can tell you they are just an informality of the process that's been there for years, Ours is a meet and greet and that's it. For some that say its not needed its very hard for some clubs to break with tradition. I would like to see it discontinued but for now we still do it. Its just 3 people and the applicant. Once they get to the stage of the interview they are in, If there is a reason why they shouldn't be invited into the club then they wouldn't even get to interview stage.

Some clubs yes are crying out for members and some clubs that do things right like keep the courses maintained to a very high standard are not struggling for members because people stay and don't swap round every 5 mins.

As for the joining fee its about supply and demand and that's been done to death on here.

Picked a very nice course there. And for those fees that's a very good deal

I view it that you are most likely joining a good club if they still have a waiting list, I doubt the interview will be too onerous, they only want to establish a few basics about you and give you the opportunity to ask any questions ( such as the ones you are suggesting).

Also they may well want to establish if your a senior and if you are able to control your proverbials

The interview is more for you to ask questions about the course, club etc. I imagine in the current economic climate you will be welcomed with open arms, unless you have serial killer characteristics.;)

I got played in at my Club, even though I had been a member of other Clubs and had a reasonable handicap. Had to be on best behaviour, no swearing for the first few holes, until the lady captain playing me in gave it some very ripe four letter words when she missed a short putt.

Thanks again for (almost) all your replies.

Will update following the interview on Monday.

Make sure you sit the correct side of the table - if you are invited to sit at one. And make sure that you are not sitting too close to your interviewer - though it's probably not a good idea to take out your DMD to check the distance between yourself and him. Also best not to wear your Adizero's to the interview - even although you might thinkn they look smart with your jeans ;)

Had my interview on Monday night, met with the Club Vice-Captain, the Lady Captain and the handicap secretary. Nowhere near as bad as I thought, they asked me a few questions about why I wanted to join their club, my golfing history etc etc, and gave me the opportunity to ask the questions that I wanted answers to. Whole thing lasted about 30 mins or so.

Set my mind at rest about integrating myself into the club as I don't know anyone. The Vice Captain has offered to act as my sponsor and to introduce me to some of the members. Even though my membership will not be active until October 1st, I have an introductory round scheduled with him tomorrow, and as a joining member I will be invited to play 1 round per month as a guest of the committee until October.

With regards to comps, roll-ups etc, every Saturday is a cop day, these are not drawn but there are sheets on a board in the changing rooms 2 weeks in advance, you just put your name down in a slot (part of a 3-ball), turn up at your allotted time and away you go. Roll-ups are pretty frequent during the week, but not so at weekends, esp Saturdays as they are always comp days. Not a massive issue as Saturday morning is my preferred time to play, and apparently the membership is very friendly and welcoming to new members.

PLenty of club matches that are open to all members regardless of handicap or time at the club, and new member events arranged for October to meet other newbies and existing members.

Feel a lot more comfortable about parting with my 2k now, and really looking forward to playing there tomorrow, even though the weather forecast is not particularly great, with showers forecast.

Gutted I've got to wait until October………….

Sounds great. How come you cant be a member until October? The summer season will be over! Are they over subscribed? If so how do they know they will have room for you in October?
