John Lewis Xmas Advert

I love Christmas and the joy it brings my kids, but I just can’t see the fascination of these adverts. I can vaguely recall the fox was it on the trampoline. But no more than that.

I love all the cheesey Xmas songs, I know songs from before I was born and the same for my girls. In fact I’m not sure one has been released since they were born tbh. But getting all, excited over an advert. Nope, not for me.

I always thought that the point of an advert was to showcase the product. These days you can’t tell what they are trying to sell- and that goes for the majority of adverts. Glad most of the stuff I watch is recorded so can fast forward through the rubbish

Got to the point where they simply spend vast amounts on a Christmas advert that doesn't seem to sell anything other than the fact its Christmas to simply compete with the other brands. They are all at it now and somehow this has become "a thing" to see who has the best one

And by early December we'll be treated to the short version which probably won't make sense...
Not that the long one does really.
What do JLP sell?.....Dragons and Xmas puddings...?

Adverts can sell a specific product or they can put a brand into your subconscious. John Lewis is a dept store, what product should they showcase? They go for the latter.

These adverts are now an event, it is all over social media, regular media. It puts the JL name out there at the most critical time of the year for retail. As Bazzatron has stated, it absolutely does its job.

It's done its job if it gets people to go to the stores and spend money.
Arguably, seeing as JlP posted their first ever loss earlier this year, it ain't working as well as they'd like.
Once the Xmas sales figures are in and the cash counter then we'll know if it "worked" or not.
Personally, I feel the days of these huge , multi-department stores are numbered.

Blimey - what a miserable bunch some people are , it’s just a feel good advert with a bit of warmth at this time of year

Not everything has to be dissected down to the 9th degree 🤦‍♂️

Surely you put it on here to be discussed?

If all you want is that warm fuzzy feeling that likes bring. Put it on FB...

It's an advert, woohoo!

You could well be right there. They seem to be the last of the UK wide dept stores to be still doing okay but maybe without the adverts they would be where Debenhams are already? It is hard to know whether adverts of this type work or not but ultimately I don't think they would do these mega productions if they did not believe it brought benefits.
