Spent an enjoyable hour playing with the trackman at a well-known pro shop in the Blackford area of Edinburgh today....

The idea was mainly to get some accurate carry yardages for my clubs and to discuss what benefits I might see from getting properly fitted when I replace my irons.

Truly fascinating to see all the data on swing speed, ball speed, launch angle etc and to chat with the very knowledgeable Mr Gourlay.

I use a fairly oldish set of off the shelf John Letters irons with steel shafts (mens clubs). The first thing I learned was that I don't hit them as far as I think. (I'd just struggled round in the wind and rain for our monthly medal... so I'm blaming tiredness!) And interestingly I seem to hit the 5, 6, 7 irons pretty much the same distance.

Played with hitting a few 6 and 7 irons with lighter, more flexible shafts and I started seeing better progression and a good bit more distance. It was immediately obvious my irons are all wrong for me!

My woods and hybrid are more modern, graphite shafts and I hit them much better - good distance progression and pretty much carry about as far as I thought.

So.... the upshot is I'm going to get properly fitted and buy my new irons asap rather than wait for the end of the year!

Bring it on!

good for you, I found it quite offputting just hitting into a white sheet, I think I need the real experience and something to aim at.
Trackman stats are great to see and a real leveller when you realise we're not John Daleys or anywhere close:rofl:

I was OK hitting into the sheet (although it does project an image up there so gives you something to visualise).

What's really interesting is when you can tell just from the strike that it's going to be short, or a good one, or right, or left and then watch as the trackman confirms that.

I hope you'd mentally prepared yourself to be up for spending some money!

While it's quite likely that lighter, softer shafts will help (throughout) the irons, don't neglect the possibility of replacing at least the 5 with a hybrid.

And this has nothing to do with other's ravings about both Scott and/or 5 hybrids

Lucky Gal!

I'm going back at the start of next year for 3 wood and hybrid shafts. I'd love to go through and see Scott with a blank cheque and get whatever I wanted/needed without worrying about price!

Karen i am glad it went well for you in the hub. Do you know what you are going for, or are you leaving that open just now. We will need to get a wee game organised around Craigmillar Park, as soon as it dry's out. lol

I left there feeling like I just wanted to be one of his mates and hang out in his gang hut hitting golf balls. :fore:

Great fun. I just regretted that I'd come straight from playing in our medal - was quite tired.

Keeping an open mind at the moment. Not getting fitted for a few weeks so going to put some thought into it before then.

Yeah, I've never played Craigmillar Park. Interested to see it was closed yesterday..... wish they'd closed Liberton - really struggled in the conditions.

Lightweight! You should have been at Machrihanish to see Gordy and his amazing disappearing 3 wood trick!

I played today, and the course is playing awesome, considering all the rain. I am playing it the next round of the club championship tomorrow, so fingers crossed not to much rain. lol I am going to try and put together an GM outing. I just need to speak to the manager to see what prices i can get. Hopefully get some sponsorship for a few holes. I love prizes lol.
