Hard to see the type of shot he had on TV as it doesn't show the undulations. But even in a club match with 10 people watching I think I'd have had the putter out and hit the shot before my arse ate a hole in my trousers!!

I saw one brief camera angle down the line. It looked like a 7 iron chip&run for me, but I hate putting from off the green.

What is the difference between duffing a chip and finding water off the tee. None in my book as they still cost you shots and holes but no-one has castigated Westwood, etc for doing exactly that in the singles

I guess the difference is that a chip is seen as an 'easy' shot - you bring the club back and then through. What could be easier? In much the same way that putting should be the easiest part. No take away, no rotation, no hands, etc, etc, etc.
So, when someone duffs a chip there's a stigma attached. You bottled it.
With a four iron approach, at least you wellied it! It's not gone where you wanted but it wasn't for the want of trying.
It's all wrong as any bad shot - drive, approach, chip or putt - will cost you but there's a certain golfing snobbery with duff chips/three putts.

I agree. No excuse.
The same goes for footballers who miss the goal on penalties.
It annoys me SO much when a fair penalty is saved and some pundit calls it a miss. A proper miss is when someone who's reached the top of their sport totally cocks up under pressure. Like the subject of this thread.
