Yea that ones gone right over my head.

On the subject of spirit of the game,I can only think of one example where it's within the rules but not in the ' spirit of the game'
On our course we can pick and place one club length not the normal 6 inches, I've seen players behind a green side bunker place one club length to the side so they don't have to play a more difficult shot over the bunker and play a easier putt or chip . Now this is within the rules but it's something I wouldn't do as it just feels like cheating to me.
What about winter mats?
Assuming you mean fairway mats, these take you outwith the rules of golf anyway, so it doesn't really matter that you use them for alignment. They're just a means of allowing social golf to continue in the winter without damaging the fairways.
Just found this link when Googling - it seems you can have qualifying comps using fairway mats...

BUT, if the mat is secured by a tee peg, you mustn't tee up your ball on it - but of course you wouldn't dream of doing that.
would/could it be qualifying under these conditions tho ?...Your post implied that it was something that you would always do at whatever course you were playing.
However, even on your own course, missing the chip over one bunker could put you outside the buffer zone and get you a stroke if going from x.4 to x.5.
