Is this within the rules?

there are many instances of playing within the rules, which is by definition within the spirit of the game, but you wouldnt catch me or anyone I've even known do them.

That's an interesting position to take up. If there are rules that we wouldn't catch you applying, and the spirit of the game involves abiding by the rules, aren't you then acting outwith the spirit of the game?

Perhaps if you cited a few examples, it would be easier to follow.

So I could roll up to the next medal and place a club down for alignment on any tee box. Just doesn't seem right, but if it's in the rules I've learned something else, not that this would come up very often I suppose.

You may use and leave in place anything that is already there but if you place anything to help with alignment then it must be removed before you make a stroke.

I.'ll have to stop dragging the trunk of a dead tree down the line then!

(My last post was not supposed to be serious)

On the subject of spirit of the game,I can only think of one example where it's within the rules but not in the ' spirit of the game'

On our course we can pick and place one club length not the normal 6 inches, I've seen players behind a green side bunker place one club length to the side so they don't have to play a more difficult shot over the bunker and play a easier putt or chip . Now this is within the rules but it's something I wouldn't do as it just feels like cheating to me.

Don't you consider it to be cheating to be possibly inflating your handicap by playing 'more difficult' shots than necessary.

The specimen LR suggests 6 inches, 1 club length etc. so within 1 club length is perfectly normal and acceptable. Why, when the rules allow, would you want a player (possibly a higher handicapper and of lesser ability than you) to make his next shot more difficult than necessary.

I'm not going to look up the rules and just answer as if I was on the course and was asked, I'd be very doubtful that using an outside agency to align yourself is within the rules..........if it turns out to be ok I'd query that it's within the spirit of the game.

Why wouldnt it be within "the spirit of the game"

FC lines himself up with the club across his chest before every shot.

Because for me this seems to much of a advantage ,I would feel better if the L/R stated one club length except for green side bunkers where it would be 6 inches.

Wouldn't that be totally impractical, 2 local rules for the same reason?

It's the same for everyone, why is it a problem?

Think that's stretching it a bit,we have only ten green side bunkers and I very much doubt it would affect my h/c at all.

Your post implied that it was something that you would always do at whatever course you were playing.

However, even on your own course, missing the chip over one bunker could put you outside the buffer zone and get you a stroke if going from x.4 to x.5.

The rules are not there only to make life difficult. Deliberately ignoring a rule which helps is no more morally right than ignoring one that penalises. Do you ignore the ladders when playing snakes and ladders? ;)

Ok fair enough some valid points raised, sometimes it's good to get a different point of view to get a better perspective on things, so if this situation arises again I will take the easier option and not cheat and protect my h/c;)

As for the snakes and ladder analogy..... Not good .....think I will pass on that one:)
