Had my christmas party last night so played golf saturday instead of today ..13 hole winter league.. heavy frost friday so all temp greens , rubbish small frozen greens, just heard they played full greens today , i didnt think you could even move the pin placements let alone different greens in the same comp , i know you take pot luck with the weather when it over 2 days but with greens ? surely a two day comp has to be played on the exact same course or does it mater that it was a 13 hole comp? .. thoughts please guys..

Similar to our place mate. Ours is over 9 holes though but Yesterday was all temp greens and today i was out just to mark for my mate who couldnt play yesterday and there was only 2 temps rest were normal greens. For him was approx 200 yds longer than those that played yesterday.
I think in winter it's play it as it is on the day and pot luck if you get a long day.

It's a tough call. You can have a medal competition on one day where it can be good weather in the morning an raining and blowing a gale in the afternoon, or frozen solid in the morning and sunny and nice greens in the afternoon.

I do see what you mean when temporary greens are used on one day of a comp though, I dont think that is fair.

during the season we have a saturday and monday medal.both are the same and the saturday was introduced for those who couldn't make the monday night medal.

we had similar discussions regarding this but our pin placements were always the same as far as i'm aware.but our gripe was weather conditions.if it was braw and sunny and calm on the saturday then blowing a hooley on the monday night and raining then surely this is not fair?

How can the CSS be valid for a comp that ran three days apart?

seems strange having a different course set up for same comp i thought the pins were left in same place for an all weekend event.
dont think the weather is an issue as you can get variations between am and pm but different greens and pin positions dont agree with that

The course and pin positions do have to remain the same as far as I know. Last winter they actually moved to proper greens half way through one of our comps meaning some played entirely on temps, some entirely on the full course and some on a combination of the two. To say there was unrest in the clubhouse is an understatement

We've had some winter comps where we have played on temps on day and not the next but they are effectively played as 2 seperate comps. Don't think you can have 2 different sets of conditions if you are playing for the same prizes/points.

Our winter league matches are played on the course of the day. You play on the holes that are open and the greens that are available. It's a matchplay against the team your playing, not the two teams playing tomorrow, so I don't think the difference in course matters, the result is against the guys playing the same day as you.

Meant to add

Most of our main comps are held on 2 days but tees and pins are the same. You take a chance on the weather and accept what you've got. Over time it evens itself out. No different from different weather at the Open affecting early or late starters and in our case we are just playing for fun.

CSS is sometimes different on the 2 days but that only affects handicap changes not the comp result. Again it evens itself out over time.

Last club I was a Member at played almost all Medals/Stablefords over Saturday and Sunday exceptions being things like Captain's Day/President's Cup etc.
On CSS worked out on scores posted throughout the weekend.
I always questioned it.
Many a time the Weather would be pleasent on Saturday and horrific come Sunday or vice versa - can't be fair to those playing in the rain/wind....
Also, those playing on Sundau almost always played the same course on Saturday as those playing the Comp but from the yellow tee. They'd be able to have a good look round, see where the pins were - they wouldn't be changed until after the weekend - probably not against the rules as such but hardly fair to those playing the comp on the Saturday.
One club around here that a few are Members of - no names Fundy and Al!! - run their midweek comps all through the week. You can play the Midweek Medal any day. Fundy and Al might be the only players to play on the Monday and everyone else plays other days. How can a CSS be calculated for that? With only 2 players it may be reductions only every time..? The weather can change dramatically hour by hour so having a comp running for 5 days seems strange. Will the tees and pins be in the same place all week?
