Genuine club fitting question

I'm 6' 0" and I use standard clubs

I know people 6' 2" who use longer clubs

I know people 6' 4" who use even longer clubs!!

...but I don't know a single person who is 5' 10" that has had their clubs cut down

Are you gathering info for your new profession:)

I'm five foot five and use standard clubs, had a fitting three years ago and couldn't hit a barn door at 10 yds, so went back to standard clubs, to answer your question, no i don't think it's any easier for us 'shorties';)

im 5ft 5 and at a recent fitting at the callaway centre in st Andrews I was advised to get an inch of my clubs . no way is it easier for us short arsenals

Thanks for your post, so 5' 5" and you're supposed to play clubs only 1" shorter that mine despite me being 7" taller.

I supposed you could also grip down a bit :p

I'm 5'8", and play standard length. However, I have short arms.

Bearing in mind each iron is a different length, does 'standard' really matter? I'd be inclined to say its the lie that is impacted more by the wrist to ground measurement.

It's not just height though
2 Guys, both 6 feet tall, could need different length clubs if one has arms 1 inch longer than the other.
It's about the length of your arms being in proportion to your height - obviously an "in proportion" golfer of 5' 5" is going to need shorter clubs than an "in proportion" 6'er, but out of proportion players of differing heights could still need the same length clubs.

More leverage obviously makes it harder for the tall guys to remain consistent.
Smaller arc means less distance for the titches.

....and I always thought that height did not matter, but the distance your hanging arms fingertips are from the ground is crucial.
Surprisingly it is the same distance for many folk irrespective of height.
Rob Roy MacGregors arms were supposed to be so long that he could reach his knee without bending, this made him a very good swordsman.

beat me to it Imurg!

I know about the wrist/floor measurement but even in taller golfers you don't see one who says "I had my irons cut down by an inch because I've got long arms". Well I've never known it.

Im 5'10" and i use off the rack clubs.... Standard length loft and lie (For Wilson)..... Although having said that... There isnt one set standard of length throughout the manufacturers....
So an off the rack set of TM's could usually be longer than other manufacturers or Vice Verse.....

The question i would ask is say you played Tm's for a long time and never had a fitting and decided to change to Pings or Titleist off the rack....As you can see below.. This is only a few manufacturers 7 Iron specs....
TM Burner 7 iron 37"
Ping G20 7 iron 36.75"
Wilsonstaff Ci11 37.5"
Titleist Ap1 37"
Mizuno JPX 825 36.75"

So what is deemed standard and what does a shorter or taller person use if they buy off the rack?

My own clubs 7 iron is actually 37.25"....:o
So would a change to say a Ping iron off the rack fit me better at 36.75"s?

Do you want me to "keep it simple" or clutter your head with swing talk? :D ;)

The shorter you are the lower the shaft plane of your club, so you're less likely to be too steep, less likely to early extend and less likely to stall and flip the club.

So i need to get out a hacksaw and lop off my ankles then.....

I'm 5'7" and I have had most of my clubs shortened by at least an inch for my Cleveland wedges, my Callaway BB's range from being just over an inch shorter for the sand wedge to nearly and inch and half shorter for the 6 iron, my Taylormade R9 rescue is 2 inches shorter than standard. My Driver is 2.5 inches shorter I think. Putter is off the shelf but I've forgotten the measurement. I haven't had it altered as it is the only thing I am good at and don't want to upset what-ever karmic balance that is happening on the putting green.

Not that it has helped much as I am still terrible from tee to green.
