Irons - the best you've had

I always wondered what sort of tasteless git played with the Doctor X irons, and now I know. cheers Snelly. I never tried hitting any, as I couldn't get past the looks.

Tastless git?! Charming! Don't forget I have seen your patent leather golf shoes! People in glass houses etc!!!! :D

Yes it was me. Played with them for about four years and they were as good as they were ugly! Cost me nothing, hence the reason for havng them!

PS - Actually, I quite like your shoes...

In 20+ years of playing, I've only had two proper sets of clubs (started with a set of second hand women's clubs as a junior).

Ping eye 2s were excellent clubs. Not much of a shotmaker's club, but very powerful and virtually indestructuible. They served me well for 20 years. Treated myself to a new set of Cobra S2 forged a couple of months ago and they are fine clubs. Look lovely and feel great.

Not sure if and how either can be classed as better.. they were designed to offer different benefits I'd say.

My simple equation for shaft flex choice is that I seem to hit it quite far compared to others, therefore I need stiffer shafts. The Tour X Stiff shafts in my irons feel good although if I try and belt a ball a bit harder for whatever reason, it seems easy to hit a hook, even though the swing feels okay. Any thoughts on this guru?

Couldn't specifically blame the shaft if you're going after the shot a bit harder... normally that's to do with losing the sync in your swing and the hands trailing, and then flipping (rolling) at the last millisecond.

I tried some projectX 6.0's and they felt like iron bars... currently using projectX 5.7 and they feel like rubber  - it's clearly a no win situation.

I've known big hitters use 5.5 and guys with iron swings that look slow to use 6.0 or 6.5's

A proper fitting is really the answer for both of us... I'm just not sure I can use the same swing more than once!

Project X shafts are weight sorted not frequency sorted (unlike old Rifles), so one set with a given number can be a bit different from another with a given number, and they can vary within sets. PX were designed to feel boardy.

If you want the same flight with more feel, try KBS C-taper.

I thought KBS Tour (non C-taper) was meant to be same as PX (low-mid flight and spin).

C-taper is meant to be slightly lower flight and spin (low of both) - and better dispersion. Seems like a good shaft for me. I found PX5.5 (in CB201s) harsh; KBS Tour (in V-Muscles) had much better feel - could be down to heads though.

I reckon KBS Tour (non C-taper) are a bit higher launch than PX of comparable flex and are a bit closer to PX flighted.

In the 20 years ive been playing ive gone through a lot of sets of irons but for me these are the top 3:

Ping I3 blades blue dot (why did I sell them?)
Nike Pro Combo
Taylormade LCG

Worst:
Wilson 1200
Taylormade Firesole
John Letters Trilogy

Ethan,

Where do you get your information on all this stuff? I am starting to feel like I need to gain a better understanding of this subject.

Also, I note that you have exactly the driver and irons I mentioned. I might buy some with regular shafts and see how I get on.....

Just got some MP68's a few weeks ago and they are amazing! Grips and shafts included when I talk about the clubs as they are all really sweet...

I started off with a cheap set of Dunlop clubs from Sports Direct, which were ok I guess, but once I bit the bullet and joined my local club I bought a set of Cleveland TA7's and my game has improved dramatically. Absolutely love them, even though it took me a good 2 or 3 weeks to get used to them.

Well, I like data and statistics, and I try to understand the physics of clubs and the swing, so I like to gather info from websites and other fora. I also know a few people in the game and have played golf since, well, all drivers came with steel shafts!

Can't say I've ever had a bad set either for results or looks.

I loved my MacGregor JNPs; smooth lines, satin finish, diamond markings with gold infill, soft as butter and forgiving. Nice!

Wilson Staff Di7 my first set nice clubs

Mizuno MX100 ok but not as nice as the Di7

Ping G10 horrible ugly clubs sold later

Wilson Staff Ci9 very nice purchased when on offer !

Wilson Staff Di11 best clubs by far, these are my current main clubs and the Ci9 are my back up clubs
