iron

Pretty much what you would expect it to be. It flattens\smoothes the green to make it better to putt on. It isn't a mower

If I'm right in understanding what you mean, it was explained to me as a ride-on machine that has a vibrating roller that smooths out little bumps and irregularities on the putting surface.

Our club bought one last year and the difference it makes is amazing.

The trick is that you don't have to cut your greens to low to get them up to speed as you would normally.
I have not seen to many hand mowers used these days I would imagine that with the advancement in equipment a motor mower would do more or less the same job, and it is less labour intensive.

these things should be mandatory for all courses.

my home course in Ireland just got one of these for the first time in the spring of this year. absolute night and day difference in the quality.

Played Maidenhead last week. They have ironed their greens and they are so smooth and true. I think our green keeper has his hands full getting our greens back after his predecessor almost lost them totally to worry about ironing them... yet. If they come on then who knows if he'll suggest it

Smooth and true but a bit woolly and slow in my opinion, I was expecting better.
