Introduction

Hi Trig and welcome to the fold.

I think most of us use the PW that comes with the set. Loft can be anywhere between 42 and 47 degrees - at this point don't get too hung up on loft as the distance you hit it is more important.
With standard SW's around 56 degrees, the gap wedge comes in. But here you need to know the distance gap between the PW and SW to be able to plug the gap properly. Loft gives an idea but its distance that is the key. An even spread of lofts gives you a good chance though.
SO lets say you plump for the JPX's. PW is 44 degrees. YOu could, therefore, get a 48, 52, 56 combo or 48, 54, 60 depending on preference. As you're a newbie(ish) I'd go with the former. A decent spread of lofts should give you a decent spread of distances but make sure.

Vokeys are good. A lot of people swear by them but just as many don't get on with them. Cleveland make good wedges as do Mizuno (you could get MPT-10 or 11's that would go well with the JPX's) and Ping (but you're not old enough yet..!).
Best bet is to try as many different makes as you can, different lofts and bounces - talk to a Pro about bounce and get the right ones for the course you play most regularly.
I have Cleveland CG15's in 50, 54 and 58 lofts. My Mizzy PW is 47 degree so again there's a reasonable spread of lofts. I could go 47, 52, 58 but I like having 4 wedges to give me a choice.

Hi welcome to the forum.

My set includes the AP2 PW and GW, I added a 58 deg Vokey. I dont think I could use anything with more loft than that.

Welcome to the madhouse TT.

I use the PW that came with my set, and got greedy adding wedges with consistent gaps all the way to 60 degrees, although the 60 doesn't get out much bless it.

Most sets now won't come with a SW as far as I know, so you'll want one of those, anything from 54 to 58 degrees, then up to you if you want to buy another club to fill the 'gap', or learn to use the PW with less than a full swing for the inbetween yardages.

Most go for the former, but a some advocate just PW & SW and learning to use different shots with those.

Recently got a Handicap of 26 - Based on my last 3 18 holes (Different courses) 118,87,& 104.

Homer has picked up on the 87 and wants to know if you fancy joining Royal Ascot under his "grooming scheme".
He'd love to get his name on the Jubilee Cup two years running
;) ;) ;) ;)

You're not Welsh by any chance are you?

Welcome Trig

I just have my PW which is 47 and a 54 vokey. advocate you just use the two for now and get used to using them.

practice, practice, practice.

Play mainly at Tilgate Forest, hassocks and cuckfield. The 87 was at cuckfield, so those of you in the area will know it's not a particually difficult course. Any members play these courses? Thinking of joining hassocks or tilgate next year.

Surely even I am too old to be groomed?!

With regard to the v steels, got them both for <£40 each on eBay. Brought as could t find a bad word against them

Have played Tilgate many times and always enjoy it. I pick the right times to go though (weatherwise) and avoid the Winter as I understand it can get a bit wet there. In the Spring or Summer though it's a good test of golf.
Never played Hassocks and have always steered clear of Cuckfield. Hear it's a bit of a goat track.

Hi Trig and welcome

I live in Ditchling which is just down the road from Hassocks. I have played Hassocks many times and I guess it is a good course to develop your game and is pretty reasonable in terms of membership costs. I believe a fellow forummer Golfmmad is a member there so you may want to give him a shout and get the inside track. Personally, I find the course very short and a bit dull - Tilgate would be my choice of the two. Steer clear of Cuckfield!

There is plenty of choice of courses to join if you are looking at Hassocks (geographically) - why not consider Mid Sussex GC or Pyecombe.

There are a few from Sussex on the forum with experience of many of the courses in the area - so if you want some more advice on any course, just ask! :D
