Interesting Sunday Times article re Lowry and Well known Bookmaker?

Sunday Times today says that when Lowry won the Irish Open as an Amatuer, he was 3000-1, and his friends and family took out bets. but when he was leading after 2 rounds including @ 62, the well known bookies said that the 3000-1 was a mistake and they would not honour it?
Is this a thing, and are they allowed to do that?

I believe this is true.

I think they said it was a mistake as they never offer odds that high and made a take it or leave offer of peanuts...

Yes bookies can get away with murder! Basically there is a rule they can hide behind called palpable error which in effect allows them to void a bet at what was clearly a wrong price. The problem arises when they dont really have to prove it is clearly a wrong price, your only option really as a punter is to refer them to IBAS which as the completely neutral ombudsman (funded by the bookmakers!) almost always sides with the bookmaker unless it is really blatant. Above that you could take the bookmaker to court where you have less chance of winning than with IBAS and it costs a lot more!

Years ago when the Sporting Life was still in existence, they acted as an unofficial arbitration service but the bookmakers respected what they said as they didn’t want to fall foul of the industry’s leading paper. If the Sporting Life thought the bookmaker was at fault with prices, settling a bet etc then the punter was paid.
