Disappointingly Im Going to have to withdraw from doing Great North Run next weekend because of the above injury.
My training had been going really well, was up to 8.5miles(1hr15mins) comfortably then went out on Monday night and could hardly get out of the estate. Shooting pains right up through my left shin every-time my foot hit the ground.

Any of you guys had it, do you know any good treatments?

Had them a couple of years ago and put it down to changing my running shoes (even though I was fitted), I went to a sports pyhsio and he couldn't really come up with any quick fixes... basically just rest up and try a couple of little exercises.

Luckily it isn't too bad when walking so hopefully should still manage playing 54 holes on Saturday for cancer Research...with a bit of help from a few ibuprofens.
Any advice/help appreciated.

Physio was correct , had them years (many) ago REST REST REST is the only cure as far as i know , i was big into training then & my trainer put me on the cross trainer thing or any low/non impact trainer. Could do the bike & swimming but the treadmill or road running was a no no ..

Agree with the rest.

Used to really suffer with them during my football years. I did get referred to a (I think) podiatrist who recommended some insoles to relieve some of the stress going through my shins when running in them, could be worth looking into.

Mine weren't helped by wearing football boots with their relatively flat soles all the time.

Cheers for the comments chaps. Rest seems to be the order of the day!

My FJ Synr-g's seem to support my feet really well so hopefully they'l help me getting through Saturday.

Will pop into Boots (chemists) maybe Sunday and see what they've got in the way of insoles etc.

I got them years ago when working as a messenger walking around London all day long. Got to the stage where I could not take another step. I was living with a physio at the time he said shin splints are caused when the two muscles in the calf knit together over the shin bone. He oiled up my leg and used his thumbs to rub up and down the shin bone and split the muscle. I was screaming in agony at them time but the next morning it was unbeleivable no pain at all.

oouuuuchhhh!! Sounds painfull right enough.
Thats an interesting explanation though.

Wonder if Hid fancys getting the baby oil out and rubbing me up and down using her thumbs. :o

Yes. I had them 2 years ago and they have just come back. Shin splints are caused by doing to much high impact excercise. I.E Road running.

Longish post... but stay with me!

REST is the key thing. You can also rub ice cubes up and down yours shins if, like me, your shins get lumpy. Apparantly I had little bits of bone, muscle, tissue that was breaking away. Rubbing and ice cube up and down them with moderate pressure broke it up. Its called ice frictions.

Once the pain goes, you need to apply heat to the shins. I sat with a water bottle on each shin for 30 mins a time, twice a day for a week or so.

You should also stretch before you get out of bed. Point your toes to the sky and hold it for 15 seconds. Then to the floor for 15 seconds. Each one atleast 3 times.

The obvious thing is adequate footware. get some decent compression or padded socks and proper running trainers. You should really consider going to see a specialist as you can have trainers made to fit your feet depending on how your feet hit the floor.

I had many a session at physio including lessons on how to run. (yes, how to run).

I wouldn't recommened usuing any pain killers. It masks the pain but your still doing damage. You will even find if you carry on running the pain will ease. 1 because of the adrenaline running through your body but 2, because you are stretching the muscle/ligaments/tendons etc that attach to the shin. Problem is, they will continue to come away and thats what causes the pain. You will certainly feel it later and definitly the next morning.

I didn't rest, and i developed stress fractures, (the next stage, which is hairline cracks in the shin). I have been playing football upto 6 nights a week. Sat and mon for west cheshire and sun and wed for sunday league. plus training. Its not good.

I'd recommend going to your GP. Mine referred me to an NHS physio... and it cost nothing!

Best of luck. REST REST REST!!!

Don't do what I used to do and take anti-inflammatorys. When I was in the army, we used to do lots of running in boots and this was a bad cause of them. Med centre used to give us copious amount of ibuprofen. Still have problems with them now and then.

Best to rest, and go easy on the training, al get the best footwear relative to the activity you can afford.

I had trouble with mine about 10 years ago, rest was the only real option, but as I was self employed at the time, that was hard. I would take a lot of pain killers, to get me through the day, I did give up all sports for 6 months apart from a weekly easy swim and that really helped! I very rarely get any trouble now, although my sports are now limited to Golf and the odd game of Squash. The only thing that really still effects me is if I go ice skating, and if I know I am going, I take pain killers

Sorry if it has come over a little negative :(

Nike's Free Runners are the best trainers for anybody who has suffered from shin splints. Really soft soles that spreads the impact.

I'd recommend avoiding road running for a while, until your recovery is complete.

I understand there are some leg wraps/socks that you can wear, called 'Skins' or something, that keep everything nice and tight and can aid with shin splints and also cramping - not used them myself, so won't recommend, but may well be worth checking out.
