I played today - full 18 with no temp greens!!

I played two balls - a Titleist Pro V1 and a Callaway WarBird.

The Titleist was my 'scoring' ball and I kind of played a matchplay scenario with the Callaway. So, as an example, if I was playing a par 4 and I was on the green in two with the Titleist then I knew that I had my work cut out with the Callaway to claim a half. Make sense?? I do it like this to try and get a sense of pressure so that every shot counts (even though, obviously, it doesn't.)

So, I shot 9 over (81) with the Titleist which I was very pleased with, especially as there were a couple of birdie putts in there that should have been holed.... :o

The point of the post is that I got the Callaway uPro GPS system for Christmas and one of its functions is the distance mark function. Now, I know it's winter and the temperature is well below what golf balls need to operate at their optimum but I was very surprised at how far I drive the ball....

Or should I say how far I DON'T drive the ball.

226 yards on average.

My best drive was on the 17th and it was a beauty!! 246 yards!!

This was a real eye opener. I like to think that driving is the strongest part of my game but I guess I'm not as long as I thought I was.

The other thing that surprised me today was that the Titleist was up with the Callaway - and sometimes past it.

So, today's left me with more questions than answers!!

One question being should I ask Leftie for driving lessons....

AW i wouldnt worry too much about distance....I think for most club golfers 230-250 yards in the winter average is a good distance.....And im presuming that this carry.....
Nothing to be worried about there.....If your straight at 226 yrds on a par 4 your probably only a short iron into the green...At worst a mid iron....
Even that distance on a par 5 off the tee with 2 short irons would have you on the danceflkoor putting for Birdie....Whats to be embarrassed about there?
At club level our swings are not very repeatable as your best and average drives have answered for you....
Just concentrate on everything else bar the distance for a while and see what happens.

Thats not surprising,a lot of people have posted that they drive the ball 300 yrds, however hitting the fairway once out of ten is no good. The forum meet at Ascot was won with a drive of 278 and it was bone hard.As we all know 250 on the fairway is better than 300 in the thick rough.

Don't worry about it. You can reach low single figures with those distances. Many women pros don't hit it much further and can knock it around a 6500 yard course in par.

I think 220 odd average is good for the temperatures and how little the fairways will be running.

I'd be happy with it anyway, not that I'm a big hitter.

This is the usual post of some one who has just bought a GPS. They are a reality check. I striped my driver today, measured it at 219. Pathetic.

You'll be ok in the summer. As Dodger says, average 270? Pish.

They certainly are!!

There was a post this week where one of the forum members got custom fitted for a driver and it was giving him carry of 300 yards. How is that possible?? Surely, if you can carry 300 yards, you'd be on the tour wouldn't you??

Please note: I'm not questioning the forum member, more the results of the custom fitting machine.

I'm sure there must be some big hitters on here, but 300 yards, in December is insane.

I hit one 298 on the flat in March. 219 today. I think I need to Ping up, I'm getting old, it's the only excuse I can think of.

Don't say that!!

That's like saying modern life is getting you down and you need to move into an old people's home.... :o

Last winter just after I got my SC we played on a bone hard frosty morning and Dano hit a belter downwind down our 11th so we measured it....now he aint short and we all had a guess and those guesses were ranging from 310 to 330 yards......................

lo and behold it was 296,296 from a strong hitter down breeze on rock solid ground, alright it was cool but to me that proved that claims of 270 plus average even in mid summer are tales from Jackanory.

AW i wouldn't worry about it i think that the custom fitting machine was cranked right up to make it look good. Those distances in this cool air ,wet ground are ok as OAP2 :) said a short iron or mid iron in.

The GPS is a reality check i remember i played at Panmure in October and smashed one down the the last,my mate measured it went 261 yards,we thought it was a lot further, so to hit it 300 yards like some on here is a bit of fantasy island stuff mate, good shooting anyway with the 81.

I knew it. One mention of old peoples homes and here he is.

Any way, it's time to move to the yellows when you are taking a driver on a par three, and not getting there.
