Ignoring the rules

Yeup, but alot of people still think you can't

It seems generally that when people ignore some rules it's mainly to keep the game moving and to speed up play. :)

Bob arn't you allowed to tap the ball while holding the flag as long as its not in the hole - I am sure thats a recent rule change last 5 years maybe

Agree, the flag can't be touching the ground either i.e not using it to build a stance (leaning on it)

No to any slack rules...thats why I see so many people in medal play doing the wrong thing. They play with their mates and the same thing applies. Play the game as it should be and you'll never go wrong. If you want to give someone a putt in match play then fine....but that is the rule.

I see dropping from the trees at the nearest point where they can get a shot at the green. Marking the ball with their putter head. Lifting the rake with their club and touching the sand, before they play their shot. Playing prov ball when you cant. Grounding a club at the edge, but still in the water hazard, thinking it's okay because it's not in the water. Taking two clubs on a free drop. Dropping on the wrong side of staked trees to get a clear shot at the green when their ball was clearly on the far side. Players who think the nearest point of relief is the point that makes the shot easier. Players who think it's okay to spread the grass claiming their checking if it's their ball when they've already said it's mine. Players who dont tell you they've changed their ball after hitting into the rough and finding it........and more. Been there, seen it, not done it...play to the rules.

Lots of players dont know...so they dont see it.

Clearly you've played a few rounds with Smiffy

It's a very interesting thread. I can see how some prefer the more relaxed approach especially at weekends on a busy course and the other side of the coing and that rules are rules and should be adhered to.

I have to say I'm a little in Camp A with a lot of Camp B chucked in. I'm not against the odd drop for a lost ball to keep the game moving but I will pull people up when they blatantly take the wee with their drops for releif, grounding clubs in bunkers etc. It's these type of infringements more than the casual drop that tend to get broken when it comes to competitive play. I think the majority on here understand the principles of playing a provisional (declaring it before hitting it) and being able to hit it again until you get to the point where the original was thought to be lost.

I have to be honest and say that if every group adhered to all of the rules especially the once a week guys that rarely go into medals anyway, we could be looking at 5+ hours every time. At least as it stands we get round in about 4 hours even on a slow day.

I may have the rule wrong, but numerous times I've seen a fellow player mark someone else's ball to speed play up, only for the player himself to re-spot it.

I've never ever seen anyone question it, so have I got it wrong or is it another case of players ignorance to the rules?

I thought the person who marked the ball was supposed to put it back.

I mark the ball with the putter head, whilst lining it up.
I thought it was well within the rules?

Could someone clarify this?
