Idle Daydream

Quiet (and extremely bored) here at work this afternoon so was idly thinking (after seeing Murph's "playing with only a 9iron" post) of how I would get round my own course whilst only using a pitching wedge and putter??

Without getting up & down and knocking the pins out every hole, I reckon I can get it round fairly comfortably in 83 (13 over) blows. I think 80 would be achievable on a good day, would have to be playing out of my skin to go much lower than that. Any other thoughts?


I might consider giving it a go one summer evening, might get some comments off the greens staff when they see a big wedge divot on the 530yd par5 tee though!!

at a club i used to be a member of we had a 2 club comp - oneclub and one putter - i usually used an 8 iron, scoring wasnt that different......i often in winter play with 1/2 a set - good test of hitting knock-down shots

When I was a junior about 15 I used to go out with one club a lot, and shot 79 with just an 8 iron on a par 70 course

when I were a lad all we had was one club each, no balls we had to 'find' those.
my elder brother had a 2-iron, I had a 7 and my younger brother had a putter.

by god we were cr*p!

When i was a junior i played last hole at Reading 460 yards with just a wedge in one over.By hooding the clubface and playing the ball of the back foot it is amazing how far you can hit the ball with a low hook.It was also the summer of 1976 and the fairways were burnt.Putting is not too bad if you hit the middle of the ball.I think i must have invented the belly wedge without knowing!

It must be said i did win a couple of bets and i had been practising before hand.I think i must have been reading Lee Trevino's book of hustling at the time.

I'd need more than that to clear the carry on our 3rd hooded face or not. Even in my wildest dream I wouldn't be able to hit a wedge 150 yards into a prevailing wind (those that have played it will know what I mean). Other than that one hole I think it would be possible to probably play level 5's but I'm not so sure how much lower I could go
