I think I've sussed this game of ours

One of my last posts on here was about 3-4 weeks ago after a terrible round of thins, shanks, pulls and slices. Since then I've been thinking about what I can do to improve, and my idea was to make a 3/4 swing. I decided that what I'd lose on distance I'd hopefully gain in accuracy.

I tested it down the range and found that it seemed to work, but the true test came yesterday when I played a full round. The results were amazing. Of 14 drives, I only messed 1 up, even that went straight. I was still getting 220-240 yards with it. My irons also benefitted, with only 1 or 2 poor shots that didn't really get punished. Add to this my new putting routine, and had my best round in since I came back a couple of years ago, and it felt brilliant. I ended up 22 over, and a couple of those were from unlucky putts (rogue bits of grit on the putter resulted in bad connections).

so yeh, it's easy this game!

Glad you had a good round.

There's a lot to be said for shortening the swing, but never think you've got it sussed and definately don't post as much on here, the golf gods are lurkers to this forum :D

As for the putting, grit on the putter face isn't bad luck, it's careless

It's amazing how such a small change can have a massive impact on mental and physical performance. Good job mate, keep at it and you will probably find little improvements in other areas of your game too. Oh and defiantly get into a routine of wiping your putter face after practice strokes :) I've used the grit excuse too for missing putts. Heheee :ears:

Yep, the grit on the putter was on the first 2 holes, never had it happen before and i was still half asleep! Never noticed sand on greens before so that's definitely something I'll be checking for in future!

Saying I've sussed it was definitely tongue in cheek (22 over tells me that!) but lately I've been between 30-40 over so this small change instantly knocked 10-20 shots off and I bloody loved it!

Sounds like me a month ago. Decided to do what feels like a half swing and been playing my best golf ever. A mixed open win, a medal win and a cut (3rd place) all in 3 weeks.

Oh yea I then shanked 30 balls at the range the other night haha.

You have not sussed it :D

I've always struggled to hit consistently with a 3/4 swing and sooner or later it'll go back to my standard length that said I never hit a wedge flat out. If you're getting consistent results then carry on but you'll never suss the game

"I think I've sussed this game" Guaranteed to get everyone reading!

I'm a great fan of John Jacobs. In his "Play Better Golf" book, published 1969 and still one of the best golf books out he says "Never worry about how far back the club goes; its distance will be determined by your physical make-up, and you should make no artificial attempt to increase it or decrease it" I find a 3/4 swing very hard to do properly, but, to each his own. If it works for you, fine. I think a worse fault is overswinging and losing control.
