I think it should have been a penalty....

The original question "how did your putt move?" was not rhetorical, FC was asking for information. Let arguing continue..:D

I am intrigued about the "take your time" advice that we have all been guilty of at some time I am sure. Is this why you hear on television pros (mostly USPGA) saying "I'll wait"?

Is this related in any way? Maybe another way of saying don't rush, take your time but without risk of a rule breach?

So you agree that ''how did that miss'' and ''how did that miss'' can mean 2 different things?

The one thing that Derek will never admit is that he is ever wrong! In the 5 years I have known him, he has been wrong about a gazillion times but admitted it zero times........arrogant, stubborn and obstinate are words that spring to mind. And this hole size thing is here to stay I'm afraid.....he's like a dog with a bone.....

?

With that explanation it's clearly a penalty issue. Thanks for clearing that up so I don't have to discuss the matter with Del any more!

Thank you sawtooth! You have confirmed what I had been saying all along. Assuming that the FC was fairly new to the game, I personally would do what you did, and answer that I couldn't give him advice that would help his play and show him the definitions and rules at a convenient time. If it was somebody who should know the rules, then I might consider adding the 2 penalty strokes and/or reporting him to the committee.

P.S. I have missed a 3 inch putt trying to tap it in quickly without standing on anybody's line, so probably better just to mark it and take your time when it's your turn to putt again!

It is only a clear breach if the person asking the question might gain a benefit from the answer in his playing of the hole (in this case). If the person asking the question had already holed out it made no difference whatsoever, and as that information wasn't in the OP then there wasn't a clear breach of anything on what was posted. It only became apparent when the Sawtooth added that the person asking the advice was still to putt and that his ball was in a position that meant that the information could be useful to him.

The original poster has since clarified that he putted first and the fellow competitor asked the question after that, but before he putted.

Er, exactly what I said?

I suspect that's just their way of letting the other players know that aren't going to finish and that whoever is away is now due to play.

You mean that you think I'm wrong Rick! If I didn't have to argue with people like you, I could waste far less of my life trying to explain things to folk that they haven't read properly.

Difficult to read it properly when all the relevant information isn't contained in the original post, hence some people asked for clarification, but congratulations on your lucky guess.

It wasn't a lucky guess! I just remembered what the original poster had said in his original and subsequent postings.

We played on New Years Day and on the second green after I had played my putt a fellow competitor asked me "how did that putt move?"

I told him that it would be a good idea if I didn't answer that question. I wasn't 100% sure ( I was reasonably sure) at the time that he had already broken a rule by asking the question but now I'm quite certain that he should have received a 2 shot penalty.

The 3rd person in our group didn't really say much at all so we ignored it and carried on.

In the end I am probably just as guilty as the guy who asked the question, for choosing to let it go or at least discussing it with the capt and others back in the clubhouse.

I guess you could say that I bottled it.:(

Here it is then, the OP; just bold up the bit where it says that the person asking the question was yet to putt out and would have received a benefit from the answer and we're all done. Of course, if that bit isn't there then more information would be required to make an informed response.....

I think that we are bashing our heads against a brick wall Blue, but all was made clear by Rickg in his post. Everyone got the point but one, which really was the same with the total nonsense about hole size and putting yips. He will get ignored by everyone in the end!

I said it early doors as well but some (all) of my posts were removed

In view of Fragger's post above yours Chris, I'm going to to bow out of this one quietly and stop wasting my time arguing before I get a PM :o, Rick was spot on. Happy New Year mate.
