I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

Blame the weather and you relaxing mate, had the shanks badly last year, got through them, had 4-6 months with no issues and 3 appeared yesterday.

Putting it down to a one off and trying to totally forget them as as you say they do terrible things to your head when stood over the ball.
Weather was great. 😂 Cold wind but sunshine all afternoon. So much so that none of us noticed the sun until we got back to the clubhouse and you had 16 beetroot faces all sitting together. Had to put a ton of aftersun on when I got home.

First time experiencing the shanks, my miss is normally a big pull left. As you say, hopefully it’s a one off but it couldn’t have come at a worse time, I finished DFL with a net 94. 😂

Board comp this morning and the course set up was interesting to say the least! Pins tucked on shelves or in bowls, getting close to them or one putt opportunities were nigh on impossible scoring was never going to be low.

After a solid par at the 1st, hit my tee shot at the 2nd, absolute peach of a Driver up the left side it pitched slap bang in the middle of a 150yd stake which pinged it straight left into the trees and right up against stump, a penalty drop later walked off with a double bogey having not hit a bad shot.

Our 8th hole tee was moved for the day about 40yds back. No issue with the distance however at that position there is a small part of OOB you have to clear and there is a large tree that over hangs the tee box at about launch height for everyone. Works were meant to be done to remove the overhanging branches as You either have to hit an Almighty slice starting it over the 7th green or a low stinger 3wood/4 iron to get under it , but they haven’t done that and moved the tee back anyway . In our group 1 guy went for the slice but ended up in the 7th fairway making it impossible to reach the hole in 2 and then having to play over 3 fairways to get there. 1 guy went for the stinger caught the branch and dropped OOB meaning he had to re tee his ball and hit down the 7th. I got lucky with the Mini Driver as hitting off the deck keeps it low, it did clip the branches but it kept going. According chat in the clubhouse only myself and a scratch guy managed to hit the fairway and score less than a double on that hole, nobody is happy with the Greens staff or Comp secretary that worked out the course set up today.

Stood on the 18th tee I was +4 gross and I’d played bloody well to keep it that low. Striped my Mini Driver down the right side of the fairway only had a PW to the green. Possibly the easiest approach possible to that hole, until I managed to Straight up shank it 60yards right into the crap. Walked off with a triple bogey 7, to shoot 7over par.

So with the exception of that shank, I genuinely hit the ball the best I have this year, putted unbelievably well. When I left the leading score was +3 Nett, the irony is if I made just a par at the last I’d have been leading! Now I’m not even in the prize money 😂

When you say the 8th tee was moved 40 yards back, does this mean that it’s normally not vaguely close to its correct position or it was just far from it today? Or were you playing off a different tee set to what you normally play off?

I’ve never seen the tee that far back on that tee box. The actual Tee box is about 60yards long front to back and is correctly measured for the set of tees we were using today. But I believe we don’t tend to play from the tips of it due to the work on the overhanging branches not having been done, which was supposed to happen before the Comp season started 🤷🏼.

Monthly medal day, signed up went to the range sprayed it everywhere.. massive confidence boost that 🤯.
Then started very nicely, my mindset was to just play to my handicap don’t over expect play within my limits and be honest about my limits.
Suffice to say I had a good round shot a gross 76 but left 8 putts out there. But the greens were tuffty and a bit all over the place. So I am not so bothered.
The greens were worked on over the last week so it’s to be expected- but competitions shouldn’t really be played.

Played a new course near me on Saturday, Wellow. Really pleasantly surprised with how nice the course was. 27 holes, proper practise area with grass range, chipping area, nice club house…..the place seemed to have it all.

Anyway, started terribly for the first few holes, including hitting OOB off the tee on 2 of those. Birdied the 4th then par’d the rest of the front. Stupid game.

We tee’d off at 3 and other than letting a 2 ball through didn’t encounter any other groups. As close to millionaires golf as it could have been.

Yesterday I played at Formby Ladies in the Lancs senior ladies championship, the course was in excellent condition and I mostly hit the ball well, one issue I had that you dont really get parkland courses was trying to keep the ball on the green, 5 times in the first 7 holes I hit nice shots into the greens only for them to all finish off the back, I eventually ended up playing 2 clubs less but then its a lottery how the ball bounces on the fairway. On the other 2 holes of the first 7 I found heather off the tee and tripled bogied them both.
The round really fell apart on the 12th a par 3 where i found a bunker off the tee, I ended up with a downhill lie in the bunker, one of the hardest shots in my mind, I failed to get the ball out 3 times and then just flailed at the ball until it finally came out on the 10th attempt, I then took 5 putts and carded a 16!
Over the last few holes I tried something different, I had missed half a dozen putts from inside a few feet, just couldn't stop myself looking for the ball and pulling the putt left so in an attempt to stop doing it I started closing my eyes after I had taken the putter back, it might just have been luck but I didnt miss a short putt over the remaining holes, this is something to continue doing I think.
As a result of the round my handicap went up for the 4th time this season and I will be losing 2 more green scores in the next 2 rounds.

I've never even heard of it, which given where it is, suprised me. Has it always been called that?

Not really. I remember a comp at our club back in the late 80s when handicap limit was 28, par 72 when I shot a nett 60 I came 5th best score on the day was a nett 58.
I know scores like this have always happened over the years .
But they seem more expected now it’s not really a shock anymore.
They are more frequent imo.

I did this a few years back and ironically it was a guy in American golf that told me what i was doing wrong. I went in to actually look at putters and told the guy why. He looked at me putting and said “a new putter will not solve that”. He said “me looking up at the ball rolling pulls the left shoulder up and pulls the putt”. I just couldn’t work it out and it was killing me. Massively helps to keep looking at where the ball was for a Second once it has been hit.

Am actually playing tomorrow in our fuddle KO. And I have been drawn against one of the most irritating, boring talking rammel golfers you can imagine. I will be gobsmacked if I beat him but it will be 4 1/2 hours of earache.

I do know the problem and I try to keep my eyes down but for some reason I am unable to do it, I just cannot stop myself from looking, hence trying the closed eyes approach

Wasn't Sergio Garcia doing this when he won the Masters? Could work!
I’m sorry but try as I might I can’t see Louise winning the masters. 😂
It’s something i was prone to doing especially on shorter putts so now I deliberately keep my head down looking at where the ball was for ages and hope to hear the sound of the ball dropping rather than looking for it.

I play lots of opens and I like to have a moan when clubs do a bad job of the organising; so it's only fair when I also praise good organisation...
Four of us played Wakefield Golf Club yesterday. There was someone on the door to welcome us and point us towards the complimentary tea and coffee, he also explained the format and told us where to check in and collect our cards. Another great welcome from the guy in the pro shop as we registered. They had a starter who told us all the usual stuff plus gave us a couple of playing tips on some holes (we were all first time visitors). They had ball spotters out on one hole with a blind tee shot. Halfway house was open, course was in fantastic condition, and the bar staff were really friendly. They have results of all their previous opens on their website so I expect the results of this one will also appear soon.
All in all, I couldn't fault it. Well done Wakefield!
