I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

Farleigh open membership event today at @Oddsocks old haunt. Conditions were tough - very windy, rain and a hailstorm. Shot terribly over 9 holes.

Course was in good condition, greens running nicely and it was an enjoyable few hours in spite of my golf.

Played our shorter 18 hole course with my brother and son in law. All the tee boxes have been re-seeded and the grass isn't quite established yet so we were off mats all the way round which made the course even shorter - plenty of par 4's were in driving distance so it was actually good fun. 3 hours to get round, played steady and our kid played out of his skin on the back nine to get through those holes 2 over gross.

The course is generally used by pay and players rather than the members - it must generate some decent revenue through the summer months, so the condition of the course isn't quite as critical but the greens were good, if not a little woolly, but they'll get cut shorter when the weather allows. I'm gonna start playing on this course more through the summer - great for an after work round.

First Comp at Goswick today, Ind Stab, brilliant day, good company.

Blowing an absolute hoolie, links golf at its finest.

Highlight of the day was watching a young woman drive the 1st. She is off +2 though.

And I scored 21pts😂😂
Where is the ladies tee in comparison?

Brutal course in the wind. Onwards and upwards 👍

Match day today. Better ball competition. Felt I was ballast for my partner but retrospectively looking at it I probably wasn’t that bad. It’s hard when you are giving shots it sometimes influences the strategy. I will just try not to worry about it, next time. We won quite easily though.

Catterick GC today. Very impressed with the course. Lots of shape, most holes had something interesting going on. Greens had been tined and sanded so I couldn't tell you if they are good or not.

After yesterday I forced myself to slow my swing, hold it at the top of the swing. It worked 🥳. Very pleased with the results, ball striking was so much better.

Chipping was decent. Part way through the round I went down the shaft a bit. That seemed to make the difference. Hopefully I can repeat it tomorrow.

Today was very windy, tomorrow is meant to be still. I'm looking forward to that. I've had enough of being battered by the weather.

The best weather I've played in so far this year was 2 months ago at Woodhall Spa....

Is it going to be one of those summers where it's glorious through the week then absolute dross at the weekend when I want to play golf? :ROFLMAO:

On the "Mrs to work" run so only had time e for a quick 9 first thing...
Glorious morning, a chill in the air but no wind....
And I played fairly well...1 bogey, 1 birdie and 7 pars....and it all seemed fairly straightforward.....
Now to battle with the school run........if I'm not back by 9.30 send a search party....

I was only 1mile away and had no rain/hail. That’s the joys of Farleigh, it has its own microclimate

Last day of our trip, The Darlington GC. No wind, sun out, 10-12⁰c. Course was okay, nothing special. Funnily enough two of the guys thought this was their favourite course. For me it was the weakest. Not bad, just okay.

Some very good short par 3's early on but too many up and down holes. Very, very flat, so that was good.

Trip fatigue definitely set in today. Driving was soft. Too many drifted right, a real sign that I'm not getting through the ball and that was tiredness. Irons were fabulous today (get me 🤣), really enjoyed them. Greens were slow, painfully slow, and I just couldn't get the hang of them.

Although no one cares 🤷, I went from leading our trip after day 2 to coming second after day 3. Deserved nothing more after today's display. The winner was excellent, he deserved it.

If anyone is thinking playing in the area, I think I'd rank the courses Richmond, Catterick then Darlington. There's a wafer between Richmond and Catterick, nicer weather might persuade me to switch those around. Well worth playing though, and bargain rates.

Last week headed down to Suffolk and played Aldeburgh, Woodbridge, Thorpeness and Ufford Park (where I was based).

Aldeburgh - best greeting from a pro that I can remember, on arrival showed me where everything was on the course. Course itself is very good and is a halfway house between links and heathland (more towards the latter). Ground was firm and the ball was running a long way, greens were very quick too. Highly recommended.

Woodbridge (Heath) - NCG100 comp. Mainly heathland course, with with some parkland elements. Some memorable holes and in great condition. Played my best golf of the week here. Another highly recommended course.

Thorpeness - NCG100 comp. More parkland with heathland elements. Great old fashioned clubhouse with a memorable oak panelled bar with old leather sofas. Course was in great condition. Not as memorable as the courses above, but still well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Ufford Park - hotel course, with one or two memorable holes. Worth considering for a group visit.

Yesterday had a trip over to play Matlock in Derbyshire with a society. Bit of a hidden gem. A bit hilly, but with many memorable holes. Well worth a visit.

Nine hole practice with my mate, back nine.

Started well enough - nice up and down on 10, worldy 5 wood from the rough onto the green on 11, worldy hybrid from the rough onto the green on 12, so level par after three. Couldn't keep that up, three-whacked 13; and the par 3 14th was playing impossible straight into the wind so made a 6 there (although I was experimenting by trying to chip on with 60 and underhit it into a bunker).

Couple of solid bogeys after that, awful double on 17 when I fat-sliced my tee shot because I was still chatting at the same time; then finished with a lovely par as I hit a full 60 onto the green - not something I'd normally do but it was front pin on an elevated green that slopes away to the back, so my hand was forced somewhat.

Good signs, I was definitely swinging nicely when I was actually concentrating. 😂

Had a practice in a client's back garden, a big garden that I'd just mowed.
For years my chipping and pitching has been absolutely woeful and extremely yippy.
I'm off to Spain soon and couldn't face going with my current issues.
Every time I'm near the green, but can't putt it, I start to panic and when it comes to the shot it's usually a fat followed by a thin ....................... I hate it and it's killing my game.
I generally burn at least six shots per round.
I spent two hours with a sand wedge and a handful of balls ....................... and I found a feel!!
Half a dozen fats/thins in a couple of hours, about 200 shots, is what I call a result.
Maybe it was because I didn't have any bare lies or maybe it was my old Ping Eye 2 sand wedge, i just don't know.
Hey, maybe it was because I found something in my swing, I'm playing on Thursday, I guess I'll find out then.

That‘s what I bought me a Ping „ChipR“ for - and I think I start to get a feel for it ! 🤞

Redemption 🎉

I played an event today and it was one of the best rounds I've ever played.

The new driver and fairways clicked and I was hitting greens in regulation backed up with a great putting display.

No doubt my next round will be a disaster, but it reminded me how good it feels when you swing freely, strike the ball well and manage the round.
