I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

An open at Alnmouth village today, a 9 hole links course. Very windy, first round in two months. Boy did it show 🫣. I had the touch of a camel around the greens, certainly didn't get the hang of the very fast greens.

Painfully slow, 4.5hrs for a short course, far too much standing around. Decent off the tee, okay at times with fairway woods, the rest ............

Feeling thoroughly battered now but still nice to get out

18 holes today. Right in the middle of the really nasty weather. 17-18mph winds and driving rain. Kept going though and carded a 78. Which given the conditions I am happy with. Some silly mistakes like forgetting that the wind was playing 2 clubs minimum into .. definitely not 2 clubs down it ( how does that work??) but all positive signs my winter work is on track.
Course greens were in good shape despite a light tining..
They do say the wind has twice as much effect hitting into it than it does wind behind, don't they? That's consistent with what I normally see. Especially with my floaty, weak ball-striking. 😂

One of the factors - very strong winds can knock the ball down out of the air even when it it is wind with.

This week finally managed to get out- having not played for nearly 3 months I restricted myself to just 7 holes. Very much army golf.

Wow what a difference with our course on some holes - major tree and shrub removal has been going on in those months. Very pleased to see one group of trees removed in particular.

Lots of ash trees with die back now gone.

Yes it was so strong highly likely but also I am guilty of not really throwing the ball up on the opportunity presented themselves.
Also the fairway mat, if you just collect the ball late the mat bounces the ball up and you hit higher up the face .. and that’s a total distance killer. I noticed when I wasn’t on the mat I was okay but occasionally my mat shots were affected. This was brought to my attention several weeks ago when I teed up an iron and it popped up and went nowhere..

Was nice to have a bit of a warmer climate and no rain today. Golf was frustrating though. Front nine pretty decent apart from blobbing the 2nd (went through the back of the green as I was still mentally playing my 'its bloody freezing' yardages). 17 points at half way but couldn't keep it going. Back nine was death by a thousand one-pointers - managed 12 points with no blobs!

The greens were sooo slow it was driving me mad. Here I am trying to get used to the pencil grip, but I just couldn't get anything to the hole. Yesterday's rain and the warmer temperature must have seen the greens grow up a bit since they were painfully slow. At least 3 or 4 putts left a few inches short that were dead on line.

In the end 84 gross for 29 points. Should've been better, but my driving and chipping were mostly decent, just the slow greens that killed me. 37 putts - shocking!

Not sure if you have ever heard the quote “NEVER UP NEVER IN”? 😂😂

Yes, the quick calculation I read was that it costs you 1% into but you only gain 0.5% downwind for each mile per hour.

So a 20mph wind will cost you 20% into but you will only gain 10% downwind.

Certainly close to what I do and I’ve played in plenty of wind over the last 2 years.

Another way that I heard was into the wind you double the wind speed and downwind you add the wind speed.
So a 10mph wind will hurt you by 20 yards and help you by 10.

Beautiful morning, no rain, not a great deal of wind (maybe 15mph if that) and felt pretty warm.

Shot +3 which included a great par on 6 as we didn’t read the course notification properly this morning about the temp green being moved to the fairway, way forward. 6 is a blind tee shot over some dunes and I hit a great drive to where the temp green was last week only to find myself 60 yards past the flag. 😂

Course is still really, really wet in places (3 foot deep ponds in places) even after a pretty dry week. Greens were great though, not soft at all and running pretty fast.

I mean I'm not doing that much maths, but I'll go up two clubs into wind and never go down more than one for wind behind. 😄

Never saw a single puddle at our place yesterday. Incredible considering how wet it used to get.

Please tell me it is those at the bottom of the 16th that overhang on the left side of the fairway.

Lovely today, so dragged myself down to the club. 9 open. New driver went VERY well, I've got another 10 yards at least. Also it went dead straight. Other bits I didn't worry about. It will come back.
