I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

Nice 32C today, was two over after 8 holes and then made a double bogey on index 1 our 9th hole from 10 yards off the green.

Missed a hole in one on the 10th by and inch.....and played the back nine 2 under for a 74 off the stick.

Could have been so much better, but am pleased with the way I played.

Broke 100 for the first time since starting to play golf again, and got to have a good look at my performance by playing my home course.
They seem to have made the fairways wider by 30/40 foot since I last played there, which is great because all the places I would have been in trouble, now, I am on the fairway.
A big factor was the low sun on the last few holes - 1/4 shots with my hybrid, just to get the ball on the fairways. All in all, a good round, and now I have a new favourite club, being the G425 3 hybrid. What a weapon!!

Fourball Betterball is misleading, but not wrong.

"Fourball" implies the usual case of four playing together.

"Betterball" - implies the better of two.

You should not write or say, "best of two". It has to be the "better of two".

I think "Pairs Betterball" would be more appropriate and less misleading.

We have a "Pairs Trophy" that was a knockout, but we changed it to a one-round stableford.

It was a balmy 10c here today
I’m stuck in the house with manflu 😳

So today’s fuddle was pairs betterball.I was paired with a 5 handicapper, and he is good, very good. But not today. On the front nine I scored on 7 holes and equalled his score on one of the two he scored on. Exactly the same on the back nine, I scored on 7 and him 2. I shot 41 points we shot 43. But we didn’t have a drag. But he got a nearest the pin. Where we both got a three. Photo to follow of the par three 🤬

Our temp green on the first part three🤬
I was 30 yards behind the lads when we walked off the green. One of the lads collared the head Greenkeeper. I asked what he said as I was outta earshot. He said “ I thought greenkeepers revenge was at the weekend””. He then said something along the lines of “that’s a loads of testicles”.

Played at my other club today and started bogey & bogey, handicap of 2 so that's gone, turned 2 over and played the back nine 1 over for a 75, we have a Golf Australia Official turning up in the next week, I have suggested to get him to play the course and see what he thinks about the rating.

My money is he does not get to 30 points, no matter what his handicap is.

To have a reasonable score at this course you need a good amount of luck and also play some great shots, out of the two clubs I am a member this one is rated easier then the other, IMO it should be other way round.

What’s the reason behind the odd rating, incompetence 🤔 or one to many tinnies. Has a reason been given.

We have a lot of non Metro courses where the rating is wrong, one way to increase the rating is to put in more bunkers, trouble with that is the Country courses do not have the staff to maintain them, hence they will not do it.

Most of these small Country courses are maintained by volunteers, hence the small subscription rates.

These courses are still quite difficult to play as they are not in top condition, if you go off the fairway the lies are normally bad, in dirt and sandy areas, the rating system measures the height of the rough (grass) and as these don't have them they say it is easy to recover, which it is not, I know from experience.

So handicaps for people who play mostly at these types of courses are generally high due to the rating, when they enter Opens specially 4 ball's there scores are huge as i have mentioned before, just last week 51 points won 4bbb (two people)

Played in an Open yesterday. Course was in good condition considering it's December, but there were a couple of things which struck me as not quite right.

1. Normally when you turn up at an open, they have calculated your handicap. Not here, we were just handed a couple of blank cards and told to calculate our own. I'm guessing that there are some checks on any potential prizewinners, but it did feel a bit open to abuse or error. I asked the guy who arranged it if he had been asked for CDH numbers when booking, but he hadn't.

2. The group in front of us were left high and dry as 2 of the 4 didn't turn up, so no-one to mark their card. This also happened with the group behind, we suggested they caught up with the 2 in front, which they did do eventually. Not much the club can do about no shows, however it was pay on the day rather than in advance, which makes it more likely that folk who have previously booked would decide not to turn up.

3. We were a bit surprised to be told there was no preferred lies / pick, clean and replace. We played our balls as we found them, but did observe other groups lifting and replacing balls on the fairway. Again, not much the club can do to stop that, but maybe it would have been wiser to have had preferred lies on.

2nd Round match of Winter Singles KO. Gave the lad 20 shots…might have been tricky for me…but he couldn’t get the ball off the tee in decent shape. With him unable to recover and trying too many risky shots given my conservative steadiness, I won 6/4. How it often is against the much higher handicapper.

Played yesterday for the first time in a couple of weeks. 12/19 split for 31 points. Got better as the creaky shoulders got loose and brain adjusted to slowish greens. I am sure walking 18 holes as exercise was the most useful part of it. Texas scramble there in the morning. Got to get myself to the seaside before Christmas for a proper game, I don't enjoy the soft-going! :-)

I'll add three more annoyances that you probably experienced.

You don't enter your details via computer so you have to do the points on your card, not just mark your score.

If you get a counting score, it won't count. See above

You won't get the full results, just top 3-4.

Big fan of the club, the course, the clubhouse. The pro / organising of these days........ could do better

The winter opens are very popular due to the condition of the course, but the “couldn’t care less” nature of the organisation must annoy a lot of those taking part. It’s all a bit odd.

Had a lovely round at Seafield in Ayr, beautiful sunshine throughout so I didn't even feel the cold. I joined up with another single on the 4th tee as there was a four-ball in front that didn't look like letting us through (although they did eventually on the 7th). His name was Callum, said he was off around 13, so similar level to me and we had an enjoyable round together.

I played very well too, I guess partly due to the laid-back nature of the round, and partly because the 'winter tees' were basically on the reds and made the course around 5000 yards ish. Uneventful front nine, just three bogeys, 18 points. Silly double on the 10th when I sliced my drive (only bad drive I hit all day though) and tried to hit too much club out of the long grass with ball above feet. More than made up for it with back-to-back birdies on 11 and 12! Callum also made birdie on 11 which was a nice moment. Just one more dropped shot in the last six holes so I finished with a 4 over par 73. 39 points, using a playing handicap of 7 which Hole19 gave me (I didn't check if it was completely accurate but it won't be far off). Callum also played decent, but a couple of disappointing doubles on his back nine left him on 78 I think he said. And we breezed round in two and half hours. Great day!

First round for 7wks, I had a lesson a couple of weeks ago and I’ve done very little practice, decided to eat rather than warm up…. Started double/bogey/bogey, chucked in a couple more to be +6 after 7, I then steadied the ship with par’s on 8 & 9. After another sausage bap at the turned I remembered how to play golf, tap in birdie on 10, three putt par on 14 🤯 missed a short par putt on 16 🤬. I did then hit it to 6 inches on the par 3 17th, and then a good drive & 6i to the front edge of 18 for an easy up & down birdie.

+6 out
-2 back

Very happy, if I can get some practice time this week then hopefully a better start next weekend.

A lovely day so went out for a few holes with a couple of mates. We only managed 11 holes as we were late off. Doubled the 1st and then had four birdies to play the 11 holes in 2 under. Where are these rounds in the summer when it really matters 🤣
