I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

Played 18 holes this afternoon.

Was 6 over after 9 but I was playing much better than that suggests.

I then went par, par, birdie, bogey, carried on my par run until the 18th, including making an unbelievable putt on 16 to save par.

Completely fluffed my tee shot on 18, managed to get pin high after my next two shots for a chance at par and ended up with an annoying double!

I'm absolutely in love with my S2S Jailbird, I've always fancied myself as a decent putter but now I feel like I can make almost anything.

Went out with new-to-golf son in law in the midweek comp yesterday - we both played pretty bad and my early season consistency has now been replaced with erratic scoring that sees my good rounds being separated from my bad rounds by about 8 shots. I HAVE to figure the bunkers out at our place, the sand is unpredictable at the best of times but yesterday there was intermittent light rain which was firming the top layer of sand up and I just could not play a decent shot from the greenside traps.

Jamie came out with us - no point in him entering the comp as he can't win any money and it doesn't count towards any order of merits, but he put a GP card in. Had a really solid finish to the round with a birdie on 16 and eagle on 17 which saw him 3 over par as we walked off 18. Couple of disappointing holes - 13 stands out 280 yard drive - 40 yards to the pin and he walks off with a bogey from a spot he'd be hoping to make birdie from.IMG_7061.jpeg

Great day yesterday at Leigh Golf course. Final day of lads golf trip. After two days of playing links in horrendous winds (Fleetwood and St Annes Old) brilliant courses that they are, it was a real battle v The Wind. So with the wind a lot less, and cover from trees, scores were a lot better. A real battle between all four of us ensued. With one lad miles in front after nine, collapsed and let the three of us back in. The winner with 33 points, after hiiting the front after the 16th and holding his nerve down the last two holes. 31, 30 and 28 were the others. Now 33 might not seem a great winning score, but the greens were scary quick with ridiculous pin positions. The winner putted up on one very steep one, a five meter putt and up a gradient of about 3 meters to a pin on a tiny ledge, only to have his ball roll back to his feet! What a brilliant course. Not long, but well presented and stunning greens. I hit a green on a par four 250 yards dog leg right. Sent the scary putt 2 meters past the hole after breathing on it, but got the putt back for a nice 4 pointer. Brilliant three days of golf, drinking and proper golf banter!!!!! Best laugh was me saying, on day one, you can claim "unplayable" anywhere on the course. To whit one lad said "I've never heard such nonsense in all my days" and then over and over for the three days.
Brilliant!

Going to conduct a little experiment over the next few days (no I'm not Bryson) as have a bit of spare time.

I'm going to play my home course from each set of tees.

Forward tees - Shortens the course to around 5300 yards - should be very scoreable for me. I'd expect to shoot in the 70s but only getting 8 shots. 79 or better to play to hc.
Middle tees - Around 6000 yards - still should be scoreable but will depend on the wind. I usually get 10 shots here so 81 to play to handicap.
tips - 6600 yards - tough due to the distance but on a good calm day I can do well here with 13 shots.

I mainly want to get used to 'low' scoring so the forward tees will be interesting - assuming I play reasonably well I should score in the mid 70's.

Post back how you get on. Will be interesting to hear.

Intersting, but if you played any one of the tees 3 times, would you expect similar scores? 9.6 is a respectable HI but I would not really expect that much consistency. I think that you would need to play each several times before you see a pattern emerge.

We had a men's comp off the Ladies tees and I shot 1 under, thought it would be easy but I did not hit a lot of drivers due to the angles off the tees,
was a lot of fun and made you think about your tee shots instead of just pulling out driver every time.

I already play off the middle and back tees a lot so I know what to expect there in terms of consistency of scoring.

My main thought is learning to score low. Playing from 5300 yards I am effectively simulating what a scratch player might do from the normal tees. It will help build a scoring mindset. Force me to think more strategically about tee shots instead of always hitting driver - different landing areas off the tee, different hazards come into play. Mental affect of handling pressure knowing I'm scoring well and that it's ok to shoot 75 and not *** the bed. I do agree with the saying that the closest to the hole off the tee the better but it also is ok at times to aim for a bogey at worse on a stroke hole.

Looking at my course on maps from the forward tees I'm already thinking I can't hit driver on a lot of holes and that certain things become new hazards or bunkers are now in play/aren't in play etc and it's already forcing me to think like that which I believe will help me off the normal tees and at other courses.

If I have a 400 yard par 4 that I'm stroking on, that doglegs left to right which does not suit my shape then I absolutely do not need to hit driver as with the draw it'll go in trouble off the left. I could hit a 5w and take the trees out of play completely for example, leaving myself a 190 yard approach but it's the safe option and effectively rules out double bogey instantly, probably a bogey at worse from there. I am guilty of, especially on longer holes but also short holes, just pulling driver and being super aggressive when sometimes the smart play is to hit a lesser club off the tee to avoid the trouble and take the high numbers out of the equation. I'm hoping playing from the forward tees will make me think like that a bit more and a bit of a learning experience. It may be the difference in the future of me shooting 78 instead of 82 for example.

Although my handicap has dropped this year I am regressing a bit in the last couple of months and as such my morale and confidence out there has suffered a touch and I could do with a morale/confidence booster on the course. When I played Dunaverty which is a very short course, last year, I had 5 birdies but it gave me a huge boost at a crucial time in the season as I had been scoring poorly but my handicap plummeted from 16 to 11/12 after that in the coming weeks.

Red tees for men at my course means that 2 of the par-5s become monster par-4s

It would be interesting to see how chaps from all handicap range would handle them.
Really good birdie chances become tough pars for the very low handicaps.

I'm really very tempted, very tempted indeed.
I would highly recommend at the very least trying one out.

Funnily enough I was saying this exact thing to my mate yesterday, I want to play the forward tees to see what happens. I've seen many people recommend it for the sole reason of trying to shoot a low score and getting comfortable with it.

I've said before that Men playing from our Red tees are faced with drives that can very easily land you in serious trouble if you get your line wrong. Some are little to no different but there are a few that you either go for it and hope to hit your line or club down and end up, more or less, where you would be off the whites..

If anyone is wondering why @Imurg hasn’t posted about his normal Wednesday round today, it’s because he played like Fozzie Bear with a blindfold on, hit so many bunkers on our front 9 it wasn’t true. Mind you playing off 6 and having an off day is hard

He ended up with 25 points
I played reasonably well for 34 points, might get a 0.025 cut,
Index has come down from 25.4 in April to 22.7 and had 2 blobs today that were just careless,

Still improving

CVG won the day with 37

Got together for our regular late afternoon nine holes, and for the second time in the last few weeks we didn’t finish because of the torturous pace of play. An hour and ten minutes for three holes.

Trouble ahead if it continues, methinks.

Lordy, how can that happen 😳

A combination of people pushing in who haven’t booked tee times, people rocking up late, lots of slow golfers playing very early in the morning, and a club manager who refuses point blank to consider having a marshal despite mounting evidence that the club is garnering a very unwelcome reputation.
