Played Bamburgh Castle GC today thanks to a reciprocal. First time playing it even although it’s only 40 minutes up the road and although I didn’t play well still enjoyed the day. Hard to be angry at a free round of golf.

Great views, pretty quirky, tons of blind shots and slow but true greens would be my take on it. I wouldn’t be happy if I had to pay the full summer green fee though, someone in the group said they are charging £85 now? 😱

Yes, it’s £85 to play at the weekend in summer. Yet full membership is only £530, so play 6 times and you’ve covered the cost. Pretty mad at first sight, but it’s all about supply and demand. I’ve got a couple of mates who have caravans at Seahouses and play BC most weekends. Works well for them.

Just don’t think it’s worth anywhere near that. It was a nice course but just felt like I was trying to get up and down all day with the long par 3’s and short par 4’s. Maybe if my short game and putting had been better I would feel differently about it. 😂

Personally I’d much rather play Arcot or Newbiggin at half the green fee compared to Bamburgh. I doubt I’d ever play it again if I had to pay the full green fee.

I think it's a tourist price. Tourists will pay that amount as it's very scenic and memorable for the area. They clearly get enough paying it.

Locals play it once, as a members guest, open etc and make the same comment as you 😂.

My BiL had a corporate membership there one year and I played it multiple times for free. I was gobsmacked by the full green fee even back then, 10yrs or so, but saw many visitors paying it in the bar each time, old school back then. I got fed up with the number of blind shots and haven't felt the need to go back. I still say it's a course to play if you are a visitor from another part of the country. The location, scenery, the castle, all hugely impressive. Just try not to pay full whack.

Shot 6 over today with a double bogey from a shank off the tee on a par 3......

Off to play for the Green Jacket at Augusta this weekend, have very little chance as it is a nett stabeleford event and usually the winning score is over 82 points, so I would need to shoot under par both days.

I don’t even know where to begin with today’s round 😩!!

Played at Worldham a Par 72 Parkland just outside Alton, considering the weather we’ve had course was in good nick, greens are quite small with some serious undulations and were understandably playing slow due to recent rain if they were dry they’d be a huge defence of the course themselves! Enjoyed the layout and was paired up with a member who showed me round. Managed to get it round in in +5 for a 77 gross. So 2 over HI, with 12 pars and 5 bogeys.

The score doesn’t sound bad when laid out like that but in real terms it should have been 10+ shots worse! My game off the tee is just a disgrace, if it wasn’t for my strong iron play and short game I would have struggled to break 90! I hit hooks, pulls, pushes, slices, pulled hooks, pushed slices genuinely I could not tell you where I’m going to hit a tee shot off a Par 4 or Par 5! I hit 3 fairways all day and that’s because I hit 6 irons as I’d got pee’d off having to play Seve style recoveries over trees, around trees you name it I played it today, which weirdly still led to me hitting 11 GIR and having birdie chances of which I took none ! The biggest pee take of them was 10th hole Par 5, 516 yards tee shot was so bad it barely got past the ladies tees and I had 450 yards left to go! Managed to rip 2 x 5 woods off the deck and still ended up with a 30ft birdie putt!! Took the 5 wood off the tee at the next hole and hooked it straight left 😡

It’s so frustrating as my scores could be really low if I could get it in play off the tee and even more so that before my Hiatus my driving was a strong point as I used to find fairways for fun.

The only bonus’s today were I met a really nice guy that fancies another round, my iron play and recovery plays was ridiculous and we just beat the rain.

I really need to bite the bullet and get a long game lesson but it’s going to have to wait till the new year as I don’t have enough time to play or practice to make the changes needed before then 😒

Sounds like you need to buy a new driver.

That was always my dad’s answer when he was driving crap. Think one year he must have changed driver a dozen times 🤣

I probably do need to get a new one that’s actually custom fit. But it’s definitely me that is the problem as I took 5 wood for safety twice, hooked one and sliced the other 🤣. Hit it off the deck and it’s Peachy little high cut. Genuinely I can stand on a Par 5 and not tell you where the ball will go but will back myself to hit a tin cup recovery 🤣

I was half-joking but I see from your signature that you're using a Kirkland driver - is that stiff shaft or regular? I'd say for a good player off 3 it probably is worth getting fitted into something a bit better, I don't recall the Kirkland driver getting rave reviews for accuracy or anything.

I’ve only got Kirkland head the shaft is an after market one that I was previously fitted for. I can’t fault the driver head that’s decent but maybe the shaft is now no good. But I’ve convinced Mrs M I need a fitting in the new year for a proper driver now that the Kirkland has done it job in getting me playing again. But will likely be a DTC brand fitted or PXG as I am Adamant on sticking with my philosophy this time round of doing it on the best possible budget.

Don’t get fitted while playing badly.
The driver won’t fit when you start playing well again.

In my experience when you have a two way miss it’s your grip !
Sloppy set up is a recipe for bad golf.

Back to basics then when you start driving ok get fitted then.

That’s why I’m doing it next year. I could use the most expensive fitted driver and miss the fairway on the 1st at TOC by 70yards with how I’m hitting it 🤣

I genuinely can’t see it being a grip fault! I use a grip trainer every day always have done, my grip hasn’t changed in years.

I work on the basics religiously I start every range session with them, I do it before every round and makes no difference to my 2 way miss with the driver. It’s definitely a path and face control issue but it’s only with the club at the very top of the bag. I can make the ball dance with everything else. Even the 5 wood today hit it off the deck I can hit it high, low, cut, draw which I did but stick on the tee box and it’s a 2 way miss again 🤷🏼🤣

Not so for me, it was a big out-to-in path - if the face was open it produces a big slice, if it's slightly closed, big pull to the left. Nowadays I don't often have the big slice but I do still pull it left - think I'm aiming too far left in the first place as I never trust it enough. 😛

1st time out in the Friday swindle for months. Probably the 1st time ever that I was glad to leave the course because it chucked it down with rain.
Absolutely shocking:
1 - par 4
2 - db 6 blob
3 - db 6 blob
4 - birdie 3
5 - par 3
6 - crap tee shot, lost ball, blob
7 - split fairway with driver. Wedge through the back into a bush. Lost ball, blob.
8 - bogey 4
9 - crap tee shot, lost ball in a bush. It hoofed down so we went in.

Total of 8 points. 😳

Golf certainly knows how to bring you back down to earth, as just a few weeks ago I was shooting 2 over around Woodhall Spa in a National competition 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Played today....solid, steady gross 77 (7 over)....lost it a bit on the back nine after being only 1 over gross through the first 11 holes.

The interesting thing about the round though was that it was the first time EVER that I had more "wooden" clubs in my bag than "irons". The first of several rounds where i'm experimenting with bag set up to resolve a few "yardage bunching" issues I'm having.

Driver, Mini Driver, 3,5,7 woods and a hybrid. 7,8,9,PW,AW in the irons.

Ok but what opens or closes your face. Your hands

First match of Winter League, teeing off at 7am, or first light and we all attended, but course was closed before we tee'd off, albeit we all managed to get drenched in the interim.

Sounds like you need a new 5 wood as well.
