I called a 2 shot penalty on myself and lost a board comp on countback

You did the right thing in declaring a penalty, whether 1 or 2 shots (obviously this matters) but credit to you that you weren't tempted to take advantage.

If you hadn't and you'd won, every time you looked at the honours board it would remind you that you'd cheated to win and denied someone else their moment of glory. I imagine that would be tough to deal with.

The pride comes from the fact my name would have been on that board for as long as the club stands for all the wrong reasons if I had not said anything.

You did the right thing, albeit not quite in the right way.

I called a penalty on myself once that wasn't a penalty, but fortunately I played rubbish that day and it didn't cost me.

Lessons learned :)

Was told where i'd taken it even under advice from committee man wasn't nearest point, so DQ'd myself

Never trust that anyone knows the rules inside out just because they are on the committee, have been playing for a long time or have a low handicap.

Same goes for pro's. I've been argued with twice over rules because of what the pro told someone, and both times it turned out I was right. Funny that.

Ill nip up the club before I leave for work and tell the manager. Weird thing is I told him what had happened yesterday and told him about the 2 shot penalty, DQ and back to 19.8 I guess.

Signing for a higher score doesn't result in DQ (Search Roberto Di Vicenzo in the Masters) your incorrect score will stand!

Just make sure you learn the lesson!

Also if you're not allowed to use your iphone as a DMD can you use it to check the rules??

3 yrs ago in Club champs qualifier my ball was in water in a large bunker, there was only one less wet area in the bunker so I dropped there, played onto green and 2 putted for a bogie- afterwards I found out I should have dropped outside the bunker under a 1 shot penalty as the 'less wet' area was actually closer to the hole:o

I DQ'd myself from the club championship as theres no way I could have carried on knowing I had broken a rule.

Lifes about standards, so well done to anyone calling on themselves, without standards then golf (and all sports) would be much less of the thrill they provide us.

As I didnt know it was a 1 shot pen it was 2 to fringe 2 shot pen, chip and missed putt that adds up to six. The pride comes from the fact my name would have been on that board for as long as the club stands for all the wrong reasons if I had not said anything.

I make that 7, so you probably did the right thing ;)

I am a bit confused by this thread, i always thought playing by the rules was what we were meant to do why would I feel proud for not cheating?
I wouldnt have even considered it!

As an aside, how does a player disqualify themselves? or is it just a commonly used phrase to mean A player was disqualified

in my case I called the secretary, explained my rule breach and stated my score was wrong, he then implemented the R&A rule to DQ me. So yes you are right, I think it's just the player instigating the DQ we mean.

your concern is valid - you can't.

even in DV's case it becomes a matter of timing; if the competition had been closed before he became aware of his breach of the rules then he cannot be DQ'd, even if he want's to be!!!

one of those things that causes problems all the time

note, it's when the player becomes aware of the breach, not when he advises the committee.

Considering Fader's situation as well I would be surprised if the comp hadn't closed, and that's before the issues of the FC who was a committee member and 34-3/3.3.....

'strict rules of golf' (Mr Bond :)) works many ways!

Well done for calling yourself. I make sure I've a rule book in my bag for every comp just to check the ruling (and penalty ) for these once in a blue moon events. Shame on the result but I've a feeling the golfing karma will reward you at some point soon

You said it was a stableford comp and you picked up which your entitled to regardless of what score you may have got. So you didn't sign a for a wrong score.

Ive done it twice in 3 weeks! Was 7 over at the turn in the april medal, played the back 9 2 under in terrible conditions an was 5 over and looking at a cut on the last tee. We waited 30 mins to tee off, i belted one down the middle. As we were walking down the fairway i realised id played off the yellow instead of white, it was only 2 yards in front and my playing partners hadnt noticed. I declared it and nr`d just to be sure. I know i could have gone back and corrected but it was a long round so never bothered.

Last week on the 3rd i walked up to my ball, a titleist 4, whacked it up the fairway, then found my REAL titleist 4 futher down the fairway. Another 2 shot penalty. I wouldn't think twice about penalising myself if i broke a rule. I'm sure everyon on here is the same.

Yep you have to call it, it's the integrity of the game and you that's at stake.

Our Open last year, best ever score after 11 holes of 2 under par gross and played a wrong ball. No one would have known, thought for a millisecond and then called over to my playing partners to let them know. Can sleep at night!

Thats what the general manager told me today after some investigation. The score stands and so does my 3rd place after countback. Lets hope it doesn't happen again
