I bought today.....

Been with my wife 15 years and we've never had a joint account. Can't see a need for one. She has a savings account for us, and when I get paid each month I just send her a bunch of money for bills etc.

We only got ours because for £10 a month at the time if we got one (not living together but engaged) I found if we got it then for £10 we got phone insurance, travel insurance and break down cover for both of us

Then when we got our house we got a 4 year fixed deal at 3 year rates because of that account

Kept it from there lol

Not really the same because I have no access to it to pay for things or withdraw money. But she would transfer money back to me if I need any.
Until she decides not to?

I'd have thought the vast majority of married couples have a joint account which is what is used to fund general living expenses (mortgage, food etc), then personal accounts each

Maybe now. I think it's a generation thing. Many older people have just one current account and that's it. A joint account or a single account

I've got 4 single current accounts and then the joint account

We have a joint account which we both transfer funds into to cover mortgage and shared bills - plus a standing order from that to a joint savings account.

Makes things very easy to be honest. Both agree our % share of things and we have our own money to save or do whatever with!

That's what we started in 1988 and still do. Although for past 25 years, I'm the only one paying in!🤣🤣

I'm the 'breadwinner' so no joint account, as I cover the entire cost of the household and life in general.

Wifey has a part time job and she keeps her salary for herself. Well, she also gets an allowance from me. She'd have no idea what any of our utilities cost.

Not a chance she's getting access to any more with a joint account 🤣

To be fair, I don't want questioning about each and every transaction on a bank statement, so it works just fine for us.

Babe what's this £1000 a month charge to the golf pro?

I stated work in Nat West in the mid 80s and my feeling is quite different 😉 Most folk had multiple accounts. I still think that's the case

Current accounts or savings , investment and alike? Current accounts seemed to always be just one , but various other accounts .. business and personal

Then the joint account only has in what you want her to see?

We don't have a joint account.

I am a weird person to start with and like to compartmentalise so have four specific personal accounts.

Home - mortgage, utilities, subscriptions (alarm/Netflix/etc)
Vehicles - road tax, insurance, servicing, fuel
Spend - Golf, golf, golf
Savings

I get these vibes reading some of your posts

I did mean current accounts. I remember many instances of folk having no.2, no.3 etc designated accounts etc.

Spookily, I "expect" the modern trend to be towards fewer current accounts and more other varieties, as it's so much easier to switch cash around on Apps!😆 But it's only a hunch as I've been out of the industry since 2013.

Genuine question: Why would you do this?

Genuine question: Why would you do this?

I had a few accounts and whittled it down

To be fair, this year, I will pop all the DD's over to one account and then would say that's normal. I just had the accounts, they've been operating for some time and with autorenew, plus laziness to swap over, just always had two bill accounts. More evolved than planned.

Transfer a sum over from business to personal - currently two, but no big deal - then ignore those accounts for the month. Repeat 11 more times each year.

Spends account is spends account - when it's gone it's gone.

Savings account isn't unusual I would have thought?

Shall we discuss the spreadsheet I use and enter every single transaction as it happens

How many tabs does it have tho?? I have about 15 sheets in my master plan lol 🤣

Monzo have taken the fun out of it. I did a lot of leg work to get My system of various accounts for different things to make sure I control all my spending well

Now they just have an account where you can start sub accounts in seconds for various things. I mean where is the fun in that??
