I am a 1-iron hitting god, but.........

I found out from my mate tonight (who used to own this club) that it only has a regular shaft.

I've put it in the bag for some rounds recently and it is arrow straight. I've probably played 25 shots with it off the tee, and off the ground and it is generally straight, low and although not as long as I thought, still long enough.

All my other clubs are stiff, so how come I'm so straight with a regular shaft?

What have you dropped to make room for it?


From what I remember it isn't the softest of regular shafts, it has a mid size grip and is surprisingly forgiving. Not 100% but the shaft didn't seem overly long so I would guess that its been chopped a bit making it easier to control. I could be wrong.

Its an mid 90s iron titleist dci oversize and as delc will tell you shafts have been getting longer with each release.

You are a pretty straight hitter as it is. You hitting it straight doesn't surprise me.

What loft is your 7 iron and how far do you hit it? (honestly)

Is it the same manufacturer & model as your other shafts? Bear in mind that stiff & regular are manufacturer applied terms and one firm's regular could be stiffer than another firm's stiff. Someone once told me you shouldn't play the stiffest shaft you can handle, but the softest one that you can control; don't know how true it is but could that be the case? Anyway, if it ain't broke………..

Is it the same shaft as in your other irons? There is no industry standard for flex so it could be as stiff as your other irons if a different brand or product line.

I didn't - I told Glen I would play with 15 last night, but gave him an extra shot (bounce game).

He was one birdie away from me giving him a dog licence, though.

I don't know the loft Bob, but it is an TM RSI model.

I use it when I have approx. 150 yards, under non-windy summer conditions. l don't lash at the ball though.

No totally different, it is a Titleist DCI.

I sliced everything with regular shafts for years, but didn't know there were different shafts, the effects of spin, or know much about anything really.

If someone would have told me before using I would have expected to fade it, but apart from the odd one, it is dead straight. I think I have duffed one out of 25 shots with it.

I'll be honest I thought it would be longer, (probably hitting it between 190-220 on a parkland, but hit one 245+ at S and A the other week off the deck, but on a fast running links. Off the tee, I think it goes around 210 yards on a parkland.

Is that based on the distance I hit, or is it swing speed (or both).

For years I "thought" or used to hit an 8 iron from 150, but now try to ease of slightly with a nice tempo, rather than trying to swing out of my shoes.

Rather than start a new thread I'm butting in on this one, under false pretenses as no way am I a 1-iron hitting God.

Took the recent ebay acquisition out this evening, Petron TPX TP200, boy is that thing hard to hit!

Shanked the first attempt, skied the next (didn't even know that was possible with a 1-iron), a couple more shankish type shots and finally got the last two attempts away, measured at 217 and 215 yards.

I think it was the intimidation factor that got to me at first; long shaft, tiny head, minimal offset and no loft to speak of.
The last couple of shots I imagined that I wanted to keep the ball as low as possible and that seemed to help.

Steel or Graphite? If it's steel and from the mid 90's it will play a bit stiffer (more like a firm)than modern regulars from past experience.

I would think your concentrating on making a nice smooth swing as you know it won't take any prisoners if you take the piss with it. If it works leave it in the bag mate!

I had this 1 iron for over a year. took it out the odd Saturday when practising on my own. hit some decent shots with it but it never managed to take a spot in my bag.

It is a titleist DCI oversize iron. It had quite a large head. Cavity backed. it isn't anywhere near as hard to hit as any of the bladed low irons I have like 2i 3i 4i mp33 or 3i 4i titleist 690mb. the latter being super unforgiving. I loved the short and medium irons in those clubs but rarely had anything longer than the 5iron in the bag.

Certainly a good links club pete but won't be much use to you over winter at lee park.

Do us a favour pete and measure the length of the shaft against the length of one of your taylormades.

Its a steel.

I keep changing it around with either that or a 5 wood in the bag, depending on what course I play.

If playing a links I;ll go with the 1 iron, as the 5 wood balloons too much.

Just did it anyway.

36 inch from the top of the grip to the hosel, the 5 iron is 34.5 inches.

Is 36 inch a normal length for a 1 iron?

its half an inch shorter than standard DCI 1 iron lenght. you have 5 minutes left of the 10 minute freebe. use them wisely. :rofl:

Your 7 iron has the old 6 iron loft so hitting that 150 would suggest a swing speed that would suit a regular shaft
