How To Stop People Driving

Correct Paul. I'm all in favour of a bit of discretion being shown but to amass 60 points is way beyond the law. The guy should have been jailed not allowed to carry on driving! Hardship to his family or not, he clearly knew what he was doing and should be responsible for his actions. Typical namby pamby outcome from the courts IMHO.
I was representing the Army a few years back when we had a young soldier getting done for speeding 105mph, case before his was a builder caught drink driving 3 times over the limit, 2nd offence, his Solicitor claimed the builder was under pressure due to the recession and had turned to drink, Magistrate gave him 6 points, £100 fine and suspended ban.
Soldier got 3 points, 6 month ban and £200.00 fine,
No sympathy for the Soldier, just couldn't believe the disparity!

I think that there are practical solutions to some of these problems.

I am constantly annoyed by seeing fast food bags dumped on the side of the road. With the number of cameras on site and with the technology available, surely it is not beyond the realms of man to be able to print the number plate on the fast food wrappers for everything purchased at a drive through. Then, if you dump it out the car window, the council merely needs to check the number plate with the DVLA and issue a littering fine. Sure people can find holes in this but seems to make sense.

Watched a programme a while back about a pilot they did, maybe somewhere on the south coast. As has been said the deterrent of points and increased insurance wasn't really working for people who didn't have a valid license or insurance anyway. But they did find a large % of culprits were not driving around in £200 scappers. In fact they were often spending big in customising and putting add-ons on to their cars.

So the solution: (almost) instant car crushing. Obviously this relied on the culprits being caught in the first place, but when they did then the tow truck was there sharpish and the car was soon returned the size of a shoe-box. Theory was the word would go around quick and the deterrent was real.

Don't know what happened to the scheme, was probably binned off. Was quality viewing though.

To be honest, if you get 12 points and you're let off for whatever reason then you're basically sticking two fingers up to the Law..
If you've got 9 points then you know why you've got 9 points so you stop doing whatever it was that got you the 9 points in the first place
Everyone knows the rules and if you deliberately break them then you need to have your collar felt....
And if you accidentally break the law then you're given another 3 chances before you get "done"
If you're on 9 points you have to toe the line - simples.
60 points is just pathetic and I hope, when he gets caught again - which he obviously will - that they say enough is enough and ban him for a year.
There's too much leniency shown too often.

Whilst it seems excessive you don't know the details of how he has those points and why he has been allowed to continue driving. For example, if he was driving on a familiar road and not realising the cameras are working. Driving a fraction over the limit, twice a day to work and back, that could incur 30 points in five days, and you wouldn't even know about it until the first penalty charge notice has been delivered

Not realising the cameras are working? They are always working, or that's what you should assume.

A fraction over the limit? Between ACPO guidelines & the tolerances on speedometers, you've got to be well over before you are in the frame.

If he acquired 30 points that way, he deserved them. End of.

Just take the car of them and sell it in police auction and put the money towards the running of the scheme.
would you lend your car to a disqualified driver if you knew you might not get it back.
much to soft on drivers in this country they seem to get away with murder literally.

no MOT or Insurance give them two weeks to provide evidence then take the car off them if they are still driving it.

problem here is no one gets the maximum sentences any more you have to do something really bad to get a proper sentence now.

OP is nice lateral thinking, but sadly I think not workable. Too many ways round it.
They go in a legit car.
They get a mate to go get it a legit car then syphon it.
They go with a can
They syphon from someone elses car
Nick some by other means

Given they are prepared to break the law by driving in the first place, they will be prepared to break the law to get a bit of fuel.

there was a hit and run on the main bridge across the Ness last weekend. a guy left for dead, by a disqualified driver and his mate also banned. both drunk as well. caught the next morning. victim is in intensive care and the two perps are locked up with bail refused as risk of flight. the mate is getting done for perverting the course of justice.

Scales at the counter in Greggs, they have a hidden trap door so as you stand on them it opens and removes all the fatties from the world 😜🍔🥞🍕🍰🍪🍩 😉

The solution to stop people driving is in public transport and city planning.

Make cars the least preferable option.

Th bigger problem is with cars themselves. I wish I didn't have to drive everywhere all the time but there is no other option.

Doubt it will solve your problem but I can't help but come back to the fact we have too many cars on the road in the first place.

This minority will always find a way to do what they want, hopefully with less cars on the road they will stand out like a sore thumb!
