How serious do you take your golf

It was a gorgeous late Spring day, the company was good, the course was magnificent, I saw several Goldcrests and a Dartford Warbler, three Roebucks made an appearance, two beautiful girls on horses galloped past, lunch was a delight and they had Hogs Back TEA on draft. It was blissful.

Was this 1945????

Sounds it doesn't it but no, 2014! Very memorable but then again all my rounds this year were as there were so few. Don't think I have played more than 9 times. Still won a nice trophy at North Hants though!

I wake up in the morning and toss a coin to decide if I play golf or cycle. Not sure what that makes me out of 10.

10, will always tee it up expecting to play close or better than handicap, to make some birdies and hole some putts.

But, at the same time will stop , smell the roses and hear the birdsong

If you join a club play in comps and maintain a handicap then you are taking it seriously.
Not always.
Been a member since 1982.
Won half a dozen "board comps" and played off 9 for 22 years.Played team golf,Pro Ams and played almost every qualifier since before qualifiers.
More and more I want to smell the roses and the tea!

Ditto.

It was even suggested last week that I play for the team next year. Thanks for the compliment but I'm happy with my lack of ambition.

I always want to play well and hit good shots. But I don't take it serious enough to put in any real practice time.
I play probably 3 times per month with a once in a blue moon lesson or range session.

I guess that makes me about a 4 or 5.

I have in the past been an angry golfer if not playing well, taking it too seriously! I am much more chilled these days.

My ambition to get my handicap down probably puts me at a 9 but I know that I will only play my best on some given days. Unless I play as crap as I did at Littlestone the other day I will always accept the round that I've had, but, I want to play well I want to win, but I want to enjoy it and the banter too. I don't think you need to be an arse to play good golf you just need to concentrate for 60 seconds on each shot, so there's plenty of time to smell the flowers!

perhaps I am confusing attitude toward how you play and how serious you take the game.

I take my golf serious , i want to play well and i want to lower my handicap , but if you see me after a round ya wont know if ive shot 72 or 92,
I wont let my desire to play good golf over ride my desire to be good company on the golf course ,

Id like to think i take my golf serious enough to say 9.5/10 , reality 6.5/7 i guess

Probably far too seriously, I'll say a 9, but I've got the bug and am now trying to make up for 20-odd years when I hardly played, really wish I'd kept playing when I was younger.

Too seriously here as well - I'd go a 9. That's not to say I don't appreciate the company, the banter, the wildlife, the grass, the flowers and trees BUT they can fade somewhat if I'm having a mare...

That said - it's a character trait and a bit obsessive whatever the sport.

If we're talking comps/medals etc then I'm pretty serious, I want to give it my best shot.
I'd just class it as a bit of passion for the game, if I didn't feel like that I'd probably jack it in and find something else to do.
I usually find if I do turn up half hearted I don't play that well.
So probably a 9.

Probably a 6.5. This increases in singles competitions to a 9, which is why I tend to collapse, and a 7 in team comps as they are more for fun. In social terms I play for fun and whilst it is more fun to play well I don't treat golf as all important. I am definitely not as obsessive as many on here seem to be, not a criticism, an observation.

I take it pretty seriously probably a 9.

I dont like losing very much especially when I'm part of a team thing (like when us Southerners beat the Northerners at HFH - it would have been terrible if we had lost that) :D
