How much would you pay to join a Golf Club

IMO some venues do seriously over charge for memberships .. IE Loch lomond for starters 75grand and even if your a member you still have to fork out and extra 100 for everytime you invite your friends to play a round .

Is it not a debenture that you take out when you join Loch Lomond and therefore get the money back when you leave?

A good point re the pro but not an essential in my book. I already have a good coach based elsewhere and so don't use my club pro unless an immediate emergency type lesson is needed.

I'm working on the idea that a pro needs the support of the members to survive nowadays. EG if I can afford to join a club ( like I say, in the past and hopefully in the future, but not at the moment )then I can afford to pay a little extra for clubs - If I see a Titleist 909 for £220 on t'internet, I'd be happy to pay maybe £240 for the privilege of buying it from my pro.

Similarly, nowadays I'd feel obliged to take lessons from him as well.

Does that make me a sad loser ?

I've had lessons for a few years now at one club I've been a member of, though to be honest he's only gotten me to a certain level & we seemed to be returning to the same old problems, time & again. Now its not his fault, its really down to me needing to simply put all the lessons into action & keep working on the things I've been taught. Sometimes you can only digest so much information over a period of time, or only so many solutions to the same faults.

For what I spent on lessons over the last few years I could have paid for a swanky membership somewhere.

As players, we're always learning, but sometimes we need to know when enough money has been spent with a particular pro, or on lessons full stop. That's not to say we won't return to having lessons, with the pro I've been using or another pro, or need the imput of a good teaching pro from time to time.

I paid £452 this year.

£125 to join the club as a member which £35 was bar levy and gets me an official hcp & entry in to comps.

£362 for a municipal season ticket, this year gets me entry on to 5 municipal courses in Leeds 365 days a year (weather permitting).

going back to the OP post, my limit would be around £700 max at the moment and depending on the credit for direct debit, but Cobble hall is about £900 with no joining fee and I would deffo join up there.

Try finding a golf club to join around here for less than £600! Yet this seems a high figure up North!

Alwoodly in Leeds is owners membership, one year it was £250 the following year was £12,000 each due to a new clubhouse being built and you have no choice, you have to pay what they set it at. I think the average in Leeds is about £850 from what I have seen, some more like £1200 for moortown (Alister MacKenzie's first course) with a joining fee of the same, not played the course but planning to sometime, in fact my friend was head greenkeeper there for 22 years. Then you get clubs like cookridge where the developers did a bunk and they didnt use clay under the top soil and its like a bog 6 months of the year yet is still about £800 a year.

Its all about what you want, I am happy at my municipal for £450 a year.

I wouldnt pay more than 500/600 at a decent club and at a significant club may stretch to a grand.
Wow, a grand? You were going to get a free V***y on Friday but with all that money you can pay top dollar for it now :D

Which club have you joined Parmo? I played the last 2 holes of Temple Newsam with a bloke yesterday (to save him witing for us on the tee) and he had a muni season ticket. I know of Tempsey & Middleton, what other muni's are there in Leeds?

'Would you pay" is the key here.......

I 'actually' pay £870, and for that I get a fantastic mature, tight, parkland course, which is possibly the hardest test of Golf in my area.
There are a few area's that could be better, as with everywhere, but I dont have to ever book a Tee, (except Comps), can generally walk on without a hitch, has a fabulous historic ClubHouse, and there is nowhere else I'd even consider locally to me.

However, IF somewhere else was close to me that was simply stunning, I may pay more.

However, there isnt.

£530 for me this year at Beacon park in Skelmersdale.

10 minutes from work and 30 from home.

Can play all week got a range, putting green and a short 80 yard practice hole.

Course is a tough little test even for good golfers (of which I ain't one) so will hopefully have the added benefit of making me a better golfer.

75k is that a misprint? That is utterly daft!
I wouldnt pay more than 500/600 at a decent club and at a significant club may stretch to a grand.

For 75k membership I would want to be carried to and from my car/toilets/clubhouse, I would want my bottom wiped for me should it be required and I would want my own personal day of golf at least 12 times a year where I had the course to myself and invited guests, I would also require my own parking space and a free caddy service and that's just for starters. :D

It's true , and recently it was reported the Owner of the Place was in Financial trouble yet he was looking for planning permission to build 3rd Course And yet 20 chefs were paid off due to the severe downturn in business .
Bear in mind the 2nd course has a joining fee of 5000 , Cheaper than the Lomond but still out of pocket of the local Golfer ..

The venue itself isn't aimed as the Average Golfer it's aimed at those Super yacht owners , Celebrities and Rich Investors .

Playing Golf is about appreciating the game , not to be exploited by those only interested your Money .

Where were they wanting to build the third course?
Never ever heard that rumour? Also Loch Lomond are in liquidation, no ifs or buts they are in the clutches of the bank.

KeefG there is Roundhay & Gott's Park (near Armley), the season ticket covers both tracks @ Temple newsam and the deposit is £122 and 4 direct debits of £60 or you can pall all at once, you just need a passport size photo.

I forgot about Roundhay, isnt that just a 9 hole course though? Never even heard of Gotts Park....

Which do you normally play on fella? If you fancy a knock round Temple Newsam one day, give me a shout.

A 3 course ticket at my place costs £320.
Whether you join a club or not is up to you.
My club fees are £120.
I wouldn't pay any more than this I'm afraid and heaven forbid, if I had to move away from this area, having seen what some of you fellas down south pay, it would be P&P for me.

I play Roundhay normally as I don't drive but though a nine holer its a tough track and in better nick than the rest of the municipals in Leeds (though the greens need a some rain and growth at the moment). Roundhay is a Par 70 SSS 65 with some tricky holes, its about 5250 yards over 18.

Gotts park is hilly, I have not played it but it boarders a rough council estate and isnt the most pleasent. I know Adie from Temple, he is the pro at Roundhay as well.

I will be up Temple soon and will give you a shout, the same goes if you fancy 18 at Roundhay drop me a PM and we can sort it out.

I have just paid £300 for a restricted membership. I can play my course anytime Mon-Fri, plus Sat or Sun after 11.00 am for a 50% reduction on the normal green fees (£55.00 for visitors).
I also had to pay a £50 bar levy which i get back on a club debit card which doubles as my membership card. There was a joining fee applicable but it was waived as a bonus to attract new members.
Full membership works out at about £1300 with free unlimited golf, or £700 with a pay as you play reduced green fee.

There are cheaper and more expensive courses locally but this one appealed most. It is quite a traditional type of club with dress codes etc. but welcoming all the same. It has nice facilities including a driving range, free squash and snooker, plus a thriving social side if thats your thing. The course is kept in an immaculate condition throughout and i get a real feeling of relish when i pull into the car park each time i play.

All in all i think the cost is worth it bearing in mind the hourly cost of other forms of entertainment.

Re: How much would you pay to join a Golf Club

i've just joined my first club. membership is £1200pa which gives you full use of two courses at the club (both decent 18hole courses plus grass driving range and a pitching area for practice) plus, being Crown Golf free afternoon rounds at all of there other courses - 30odd i think.

as a bonus i convinced the guy i was under 29, so i got it for £550 a year :)

cracking deal and probably wouldn't of happened if times weren't tight cos i look all my 30years!
