How much over handicap do you typically play in the winter?

Because if it is not a qualifying competition, there is absolutely no reason why you should have to pre register the round, play the round in an individual strokeplay format and to the rules of golf and ’post the score’ in England.

I really just trying to understand the nuances of the England Golf handicap system. You are deliberately refraining from submitting scores to the handicap system in order to prevent your handicap from changing. I know this is acceptable in the England Golf system and you are doing it with the best of intentions, but it is handicap maniputation. If such maniputaltion is acceptable, then the only possible conclusion is that the England Golf handicap system is not an equitable or even a viable equivalent of a WHS handicap.

P
Because I'm not obliged to put a card in, obviously. Winter golf is just turn up, chop the ball around as best you can, have a beer, go home. Why would I need to put a card in??
I'd agree, we can't have qualifying scores because of the use of mats on the 1st cut, but even if we did, I wouldnt bother.

I would guess that the majority of rounds in the UK are not submitted for handicap, perhaps the vast majority whereas in the USA the exact opposite is true. I have never ever heard anyone express the view that US handicaps are more accurate than UK ones, rather the opposite. So it is widely believed that the system is equitable.

Why isn't that handicap manipulation?
manipulation

(i) The action of influencing or controlling someone or something to your advantage, often without anyone knowing it.

(ii|) Controlling someone or something to your own advantage, often unfairly or dishonestly.

While I am sure, in fact I know, that there are people who manipulate their handicap in order to gain an advantage, the vast majority of people who do not submit a card every time they play are doing neither of (i) or (ii) above and are merely playing golf for fun, trying to enjoy themselves.

Nice. You should have taken your clubs :)

Indeed! I’ve never played there. We go every year for the last 10 or so around that time and I always think about it. But do I trust Ryanair with my beauties?

That’s a hard no. So I just lie down instead.

Why isn't that handicap manipulation?

I would argue that the opposite is true.
Especially our Seniors (or some of them)
They play qualifiers in terrible conditions, they can barely get the ball airborne with no run either & come in way over H/C I'm sure with the sole intention of gaining shots during the winter to gain an advantage come Spring.
Blatant H/C manipulation.

I don't put any cards in from November to March. If the course is a wet turd and I'm hacking it out of mud, that's not reflective of anything. All that would happen is that I go up by 2-3 shots and then get accused of banditry when April rolls around.

Ahhh…a club golfer’s favourite pastime, accusing others at his club of banditry ?

1) "Sole intention of gaining shots" is an unfair assumption to make make unless they have all said this to you
2) PCC with all it's faults, should account for a sleight reduction of gains due to "Terrible Conditions"
3) A thumbs up to your course for being in good enough condition to cover all the bases for qualifying scores in winter

I just accept that Blatant H/C Manipulation is very rare, and if it is happening at a club it's up to members and club committee members to sort it out

I've overheard conversations & comments that leave me in no doubt about some members eagerness to play qualifiers in such poor conditions.
I also know from talking to members of the H/C committee that they are fully aware of what some of them are up to.
But, proving it & taking action is entirely a different matter.
Short of stopping all qualifiers between the end of Nov & the end of Feb (my preference) I suppose unless someone openly admits it (very unlikely) it'll just carry on & their H/C will be as accurate come Spring as all the climate change predictions.

Rubbish conditions and lack of focus, especially around putting has me at least 10 over my hcp regularly at this time of year. It is firmly just a time to be out with mates and have a crack on time.

it often baffles me how people still manage 40odd points in comps at this time of year but I whitenesses it for myself by a very a person with a well recorded handicap last month.
