Assuming you hit your average shot, how much further does your driver go compared to your 3 wood?

If I hit a normal driver - which isn't very often at the moment - I'll see about 250-260 including roll. That's average. But the 3 wood (well really its a 4 wood as its 17 degrees) goes about 240-250 and straighter too.

Several times today I used the 3 or even 5 wood off the tee and ended up where I normally do with the driver.
So the question is - how much further should I hit a driver?
Its a 10.5 degree G15 with the stock stiff shaft. The 3 wood is a Cleveland Launcher with a regular Fujikura Gold shaft that obviously works for me.
Regular shaft drivers seem to whippy for me - I can't seem to swing properly but the regular in the 3 wood flies.
I'm getting tempted to find a 13 degree Launcher with that shaft and use that instead of the G15. Might get an extra 20 yards out of it.

Mine is 260-270 with my driver. Titleist 907D1 regular. 210 -215 with my 4 wood. Nike DYMO, regular. Hope that helps it's quite a gap, but my driver off the deck goes about 240 yards.

Even if the driver only goes 10yds further it's still 10yds I'd rather have. Often it depends on the hole, the bounce, the wind conditions etc etc.

If it's a long hole I'd rather hit driver.

Murg - you saw my post about my old Cally Deuce getting re-shafted didnt you ?

I'm convinced its as much about shaft than head etc, as quite frankly, my old WarBird 4W & 2W Deuce, both with the same Steel shafts, go a freakin mile.

I mean, our 2nd is a slight dogleg 250yd Par 4, so perhaps 230yds straight to the green. I have to be careful not to go thu the green with my 4 wood.

The Deuce on the other hand : Our 16th Hole Par 4 469yds. 2W - 7iron onto Green. That means it went 310yds off the tee.
Maybe a fluke but shows what the club is capable of !

I'd stick with what goes straightest if I were you !

My suggestion would be to go and get fitted for a driver. I believe that swing speed is the main arbiter of shaft stiffness, so much will depend upon the speed of your swing. I think it's something like: swing speed of 85 to 95 mph = regular shaft - swing speed of 95 to 105 mph = stiff shaft. You may feel that regular shafts are too whippy but not all makes/shafts are the same.

Driver maybe 280 - 290 3 wood around 260 BUT I can trust it more. I just got a 13* degree fairway and used it for the first time today, it gives me many more options and leaves me no worse off using it on par 5's etc. Thinking about leaving the driver in the hoose

I only get the driver out to the 250 yard mark or so and only on a very good day. I think my 3 wood would only be 10 yards behind an average drive and I am using it a lot more in the dry weather we had without any compromise as the second shots roll further to compensate

This is why all the experts say that everyone should be properly fitted for a driver......
Me i dont use one as my distance with my 3 wood i feel is pretty good im more consistant and alot straighter with it...If i take our 5th par 5 for instance 517yrds off our white tees.....On a flat calm day and with a good swing i can get one out to 240 yrds carry with my 3Wood.
Not sure about a driver as i dont carry one yet but id be hoping it'd be a tad longer......

20-30 yards? Never really thought about it....my drives can vary from 220-260. My 3 wood always goes about the same.....100 yards straight left into some trees usually.

I managed to hit a driver so badly the other day I still had over 200 to go on a 325 hole. I call this shot a "Pitching Wood".....happens once every blue moon, a bit like sliding a SW under a fluffy lie and playing an unintentional 10 yard Mickelson flop.

:o

My driver goes about 295, my 3 wood about 280 so not a lot of difference really.

Smiffy, please stop measuring your distance in feet, you know how it confuses people ;)

I'd say my 3 wood was about 20yds carry shorter than my driver, but get more roll with the lower flight off the driver so I'd say between 30-40yds more overall.

For me, it's no more accurate either. I only use it off the tee when a driver length wayward shot will get me into far worse trouble then a 3 wood length wayward shot.

My driver goes about 350 yards compaired to my 3 wood which only goes about 220. I have calculated the distance my driver goes by multiplying the diameter of the slice by 3.14. If I dont slice it goes about the same distance but in the opposite direction which is calculated be multilying the diameter of the hook by 3.14. I have ignored the rise and decent of the shot because I don't understand differential calculus. I hope this was of some help. :D
