I know a pro who won the Surrey Assistants Winter League playing with Progen Woods and Irons. His point was to show that the quality of the componentry is the main thing.

People selling poor quality kit to unsuspecting beginners makes my blood boil because there are plenty of manufacturers who use good components (Golf Pride grips,Dynamic Gold shafts etc.) at the same price point.

I bought all my gear based on quality as I wanted it to last and with a degree of reassurance that it would be me and not the gear letting the side down shot-wise.

When first starting out I had a homogeneous set from somewhere like Taiwan which more or less disintegrated within 6 months. I have quickly realised though that there are plenty of manufacturers these days producing much better quality low-cost gear which is good news for every pocket.
