How many did we win by?

Crikey, I wasn't expecting quite so much on this.

In light of the various comments, I'm now thinking 7&6. My partner was in for 4 so oppo had to sink the putt for a 3 to have a chance of winning the hole (with me yet to putt, also for a possible 3). Anything less than a win for them was a lost match. The putt missed and was conceded for 4 (although not sure the concession was necessary as the fact of the miss meant the match was lost). Therefore one assumes match over as soon as the determining putt didn't drop, and my putt becomes irrelevant - neither conceded nor not conceded, just irrelevant and outside the now finished match?

For info, actual result is not of consequence - it was straightforward knock-out so no league points or anything to be had. I was just curious whether or my putt was conceded and whether it affected the "score".

Ta all.

The putt conceeded was the one for 3

They conceeded the putt for four and then putted themselves so match was still alive and the putt for 3 was still alive - once they missed their attempt for 3 they then shook hands conceeding the final putt for 3 - 8&6 win

I think we are all probably weary of this argument now but compare the two statements in bold.

I'm not sure why you are missing the obvious

The putt for 4 was conceeded yes

But the match wasn't over that concession because two players still had putts for 3 - yes ?

Oppo putts for three and misses - one putt still alive to win the hole outright - oppo conceeda that putt by the action of handshake - hole won , match won 8&6

The match was not over when the putt for 4 was conceeded

You have mis-read the OP - he said the opponent's partner was already in for 4 with no mention as to whether there was a concession involved. The opponent then putted for 3, but missed and the OP conceded for 4 - match over.

The conceeded putt for 4 was his partners first putt with two putts still to go - his own putt and his oppo putt for three when the oppo missed his putt there was still one more person to putt for three - they then conceeded so conceeding the putt for 3 - it's very regular occurrence in matchplay. In RC the score of the match would be 8&6 -

Although Phil has interpreted correctly, you have read correctly - I hadn't said whether the oppo's putt was conceded for 4 (it was, & before the handshake. Sorry if this has caused confusion).

But does not the underlying principle still stand? In either case, at least one of us still hadn't finished the hole. If oppo's was conceded for 4 then the handshake conceded mine for three, and if oppo's putt wasn't conceded verbally, then the handshake conceded both our next strokes - his for 4 and mine for 3?
