How long have you been at your current club, and

I've moved residences 11 times in the last 20ish years and each time I've played at a different club or course (split about 50/50 between joining a club or not).

I have a few memberships where I don't currently live (country/international). The one I joined in 2012 is located in the town where I plan to retire (haven't played there since 2015ish). The two international clubs I joined in 2020 and 2022. I've also been on the waitlist for a links ticket since the end of 2021. I don't know if I'll ever be able to get a links ticket as there has been discussions on changing the ticket structure. I joined the list at about 1400 and currently at 1000 but the last year no new tickets and the year before only 50. I looked into adding my wife last year and was told the waitlist was over 2000 people. Figure I'll add another membership in Scottland irrespective of the links ticket when I do retire.

I'm not currently a member of a local club as joining fees and monthly fees don't make sense knowing I'll be moving again in about 7 months.

One club in 54 years. I joined as a junior member in 1971, stayed until 1993 when I gave up for 20 years due mainly to my health. Rejoined in 2013 when I started playing again, been here ever since. It's not the best course in Notts, but it's decent, set in a lovely park. I live alone, so going up, volunteering with various things helps to keep me going. I probably know half the members, at least to say hello to.

Been at my club since 1988. It’s 1.5 miles from my house. I’d love to be a member of one of the big Bournemouth clubs but they are a one hour drive away.

Im only at my second club. Been a member here for 20 or 21 seasons. Previous club, where I got my initial handicap, member for about 6 years.

I’ve been a member of three clubs in and around Bromley over the years, but for some time I wasn’t getting full value from membership, as I was only playing about once every two weeks or so. As a result, I decided to go nomad. Fortunately, through mixed competitions both home and away and other games and matches, I’ve made many friends, and now I’m able to play regularly at a variety of local courses as a guest—enjoying very reduced green fees.

I have been at my existing club for just shy of 40 years. I joined it not longer after I moved to where I am now.
Prior to that I had been on a waiting list for 3 years with a Surrey which, funnily said I could now join 2 weeks after I knew I was moving to Somerset.

There was a course that opened just down the road but I knew it was going to be prone to flooding so did not join.

I have had plenty of opportunity to play other Dorset and Somerset clubs due to county card, interclub matches and opens and never felt a desire to move to another club having seen what is on offer.

I'm on my fifth club since lockdown! Can anyone beat that?
  1. Feb 2015 - Jul 2021
    • first club, joined because my mate joined, made loads of friends there, was Treasurer for three years, left with about 30 other people because we fell out with the owner
  2. Jul 2021 - Feb 2023
    • joined because it's the closest club to my house, left because I didn't play there enough to justify the annual fee, preferred playing opens with my mates from the previous club
  3. Apr 2023 - Apr 2024
    • joined because it was the cheapest club I could find where I could maintain a handicap so I could enter opens, left because it closed - I was a member for a year but have never played it!
  4. Jan 2024 - Dec 2025
    • joined because it was £50/year (+ green fees obvs), left because it was a bit crap and also one hour drive away
  5. Oct 2025 - ?
    • joined because it is £150/year (+ low green fees) and only 25 minutes drive from my house

are you a wanderer or a one club type?

I'm definitely a one club type. I've been at my local club since 1992, and I have no intention of leaving.

It's a 10-minute walk. I like the course, interesting and challenging with a lot of blind shots and lots of trees. The clubhouse is superb, great food, great beer, and a lively friendly atmosphere. It was presentation night last night, prizes galore, a live band and a good turn out meant an enjoyable night for playing members, social members and guests.
Why would you move ?
Sounds great.

Joined mine at 2009 after 25 yrs at another club.
Best around here so no I won’t move anywhere else

I was a bit of both. I was a member of 14 clubs over a period of 55 years. Part of it was the moving around I did, both with my parents and then as I also inherited the nomadic gene. During that time I maintained and returned to one particular club several times.

If I returned to the U.K. I’d probably rejoin that particular club, even if it was only for the Guinness & snooker.

Been at my club for 2 and a half years now. The course is a good layout, kept in good condition year round, with grass tees, grass fairways and real greens all year round too. The only thing I would considering moving for is better practice facilities, but I can't justify the extra cost of somewhere like the London Club.

Prior to this, I hadn't played golf for 9 years, was playing cricket.

Joined my first club in 2017, but the course was council-run so never in great nick, then said council priced out the clubhouse operators so we had no clubhouse for two years. Eventually we gave up and left.

Joined my current place in Jan 2021. I love it and would stay forever if I could. My missus is trying to push a house move however that would make my current club a solid 50-55 minute drive. That's a little too far for me so I'd be forced to leave if we end up doing that. Currently a 6 minute drive which is very nice.

Have been at my current club for 25 years, moving from another local club after ten years there. Spent a few years before that as a nomad playing mainly in North Kent.

We've been at our current club for twelve years but are leaving it at the end of January. It's where I started playing golf and our first club membership.
