How long do you keep a ball?

As I'm getting better I'm losing less balls. Not being a ball snob I tend to keep it in use regardless of condition until I do eventually lose it. This can be anything from 9-72 holes. As you can imagine, come the end of two or three rounds the balls generally look pretty tatty.

My question to all you wonderful people is when do you change your golf ball if at all?

Couldn't put a number on it but as soon as they look tatty they go into the practice bag.

Never to be seen again. I don't think I've ever seen you practice aside from a few warm up balls before going out.

I tend to use a new ball at the start of a comp round but play roll ups with a ball that's been used a few times before. Once they get too tatty I stick them in a practice bag where they definitely get to see the light of day again:rofl:

Like a Phillipe Patek watch, I never actually own or keep a golf ball, just look after it for a while until it decides to leave me...

I usually use til I lose.
I always start a comp with a new ball, old ones get used as provisionals or for bounce games.
Rarely do I keep a ball long enough for it to be so bad it gets relegated to practice.
Most of my practice bag is found balls, I have a tube of twenty or so roughed up "premium" balls for chipping practice.

Usual exception is if I scuff one up in a bunker, then it's relegated. But on my course I don't spend too much time in bunkers so not often an issue.

I sneak out onto the practice ground when your not on it Homer (which leaves me very little opportunity) :D

I will stick with a ball until it is battered to blazes if I am playing well with it. Otherwise I play with it until it is just a bit bashed and scuffed.

As I only use pick ups and balls I've won I have no idea about the mileage on some of them - and that's before I hit them once!

What I can say is that I can play 72 holes with a ball, inc premium balls, and unless I've landed it on a path or hit a tree it will look 'as new'.

I can play a pick up for ages, good few rounds. Give me a new shiney premium £4 ball and i will stick it OOB at the first opportunity.

Interesting, I don’t think any of us would use a driver that gave us 10 yards less. A scuffed or dull ball will not cut the air as well as a new one....obvious enough.

In a medal I will use two at least, they go for bounce games after that, then the practice bag if they don’t get lost.
