How good is bad

hi,
10 lessons and 15 trips to the range is should be more like 60 trips to the range u need that many to prefect what you did the previous lesson the pro should never have kept going with the lessons.

Interesting concept and not one I totally disagree with however is it the pro's responsibility to make sure you actually practice?

Any decent pro would advise you need to practice between lessons but at the end of the day, for every one of us that do, there are plenty that don't and the pro has to earn money, if you want a lesson, he isn't gonna turn you down, and why should he? All he can do is advise, it's up to you if you follow it.

no one ever learned to hit a golf ball well without 1st hitting thousands of golf balls badly.

What a cracking comment. :)

I tended to hit "100 ball" buckets in the early days. If I was going twice a week that's like 10,000 balls in the first year.

That's a bad thought....10,000 practice shots and I still started on 24 h'cap after about 1 year of learning.

10,000 a year for 4 years + just over half that in the last 3 = 60,000 balls in my 7 years....total. £2k in range balls alone.....

I don't even want to think how much I have spent over the years. Luckily my club does a discount for bulk buying and as a member I get 50% off.

Re: How good is bad - Update

Golf is indeed a funny old game. Last week I walked of the range totally fed up at the seeming lack of progress in 6 months, hence the original post.
Yesterday I played 6 practice holes on my local par 3 and despite the fact it was raining cats and dogs loved every minute – 6,5,4,4,4,3. I’m sure scoring like that won’t be repeated in the near future but at least it proves there is hope.

Once again thanks for the encouragement.

I've been playing 2.5 years, lowest 18 is 102, was up in the 120s for a while.

Not had as many lessons as you but happy my swing is as consistant as it can for a hacker!!

I'll be having another lesson soon as i beleive I am only a good putting round from playing off 20.

Enjoying it is the main thing, I know I won't get to single figures as I don't have the time, or money, to practice enough.

I'm in the 'you haven't even started' camp. Either that or you aren't really serious and definitely haven't caught the bug. 15 range sessions, four 9's and two 18's doesn't even scratch the surface. (I'd done that in the first six weeks)

at a guess you go out full of great expectations, hit a bad one and start chasing the errors. result you get frustrated and it gets worse. Except for the naturally gifted (who we all hate with a passion!) that's how we all start.

twilight rounds, on your own, taking your time - imo there's no short cut from putting the hours in.

I’d be too ashamed/afraid of peeing people off taking 5 shots to get on the green to play with anyone else.

Get rid of that mentality for a start. When I started again at golf I was worried about going to the driving range, in case everyone else there looked at me and thought how crap I was. Turned out that no matter how bad you think you are, there'll always be plenty of people who are worse!

It's not easy, but if you just go into a game with the sole intention of enjoying yourself, the pressure goes away and you'll start to hit better shots.

Might also be worth posting a video of your swing and asking for a bit of advice. It really can help, even if it's to see your own swing for yourself.
