I hve a quick look at the GPS and the time is on there. I'll keep checking it until the ball is found or time's up.

Or it looks we're not going to find it and there's a queue behind.

Don't think I've ever spent a full 5 minutes looking for a ball.
Too conscious of slowing play. Generally I'll get assistance from my playing partners and I'll make the call if it's not found.
I always try a provisional if my first shot looks doubtful. Penalty stroke if the balls not found, but at least I haven't held up play unduly.

This ^^

I very rarely look for the full 5 minutes. If I haven't found the ball within 2 or 3 I know it's going to be in a shite lie so will elect to play my provisional (if I've hit one) or just "blob" the hole if I'm playing in a friendly.
But if I'm playing a PGA pro and he's hanging on for dear life I've no doubt he will tell me if I've had my 5
;)

I went for guess as I have never checked, i dont think we would ever take the full 5 minutes.
As Smiffy says if it is not found quickly you probably dont want to find it.

Like basher, if 4 people are looking and after a couple of mins it isnt found, its never going to be. By this time the next group are on the tee so its time to play the provi.
