I hear people saying the green is running at a 10.
So how do they know?
How is it officially measured?
What’s a 10 mean ?

A 10 means the Stimp speed is 10 which means when a ball is rolled down a standard ramp to a flat par of the green in two directions it rolls 10 feet.I hear people saying the green is running at a 10.

To be fair. On quite a few courses, the stimp will change from hole to hole as well.I've played at a range of clubs, some top 100, but I've genuinely never seen anywhere display the speed of the green.
I've played on fast greens, maybe silly fast very occasionally, but I've no idea how they actually compare on the scale. It would be nice if it was shown more often, just out of curiosity really.

Yes, that mean that the stimp is 9ft.Players Club (near Bristol) puts the speed on the website (as well as grass length on fairways/tees etc) but the speed is currently 9’0” - is this 9 on the stimp?
In response to the OP, no player can tell![]()
We played Shipley, just north of Bradford, and they had a stimp of 10 posted on a chalk board just outside the clubhouse.I've played at a range of clubs, some top 100, but I've genuinely never seen anywhere display the speed of the green.

And that’s the main reason most clubs don’t post it - they don’t have consistent enough quality of greens. To be fair. On quite a few courses, the stimp will change from hole to hole as well.
10 is fast and playable but anything more than this is stupid for the average amateur if you have greens with big slopes.
