How confident are you from 50 yds?

You are 50yds from the flag on a flat hole with a flat green with plenty of green to work with.
The green is neither firm nor soft and there is no wind/bunkers/trees/ponds etc to contend with.
How many balls out of 10 would you expect to get within 6ft ?

My shots are like needles!

I often feel a prick after I jab at it...

With 10 shots I would expect 9 to be on the green, of which maybe one would be within 6 feet ............. and I'd be delighted, right up until the moment that I three jab it!
The remaining 8 balls would be dotted around, mostly beyond the flag.

Slime.

The "pro" stats that everyone says are not representative - in Pelz's book he measured the percentage accuracy ofhundreds of pros in practice on typically excatly this exercise.
The best only averaged just under 5% if I remember the numbers rightly.
There are two variables here which are fundamental - distance and direction.
Even as someone who plays a lot of chip and runs, it is extremely difficult to consistently reproduce one of those from 50yards

I have just had a go at this. Cold turkey, no practice runs.

From 5o yards, I had two within 4 ft, two at 8 ft, 5 others on the green, and the obligatory shank.

I had been practicing my bunker play, so all I had was a 54 degree wedge. I played a punched shot, supposedly to stop pretty quickly. Whether I'd be better or worse off with a different club, who knows.

The repeat ability is tricky. I didn't really get the same contact, flight, or spin twice running. I guess that's why I'm not on telly.

I wasn't far off with my prediction earlier. lol

looking forward to giving this a crack next time im out. currently under the weather which is ironic as the weather is currently on the up!

I'd hope for 2 but in reality, bit fat ZERO.

I only possess a PW but am thinking about adding other wedges in as I don't do myself any favours from this sort of distance.

this is how I would see it for me but short of the hole instead of past it as I normally lose my bottle.

I also had a go at this tonight! Measured out on the phone, oops ;)

So of my 10, 2 shanks, 1 within 6 foot, 2 more within 10 foot, and the remaining 5 on the green but a fair distance away.

what club did you use?

this is a drill you should practice when you can. popping these onto the green should be bread and butter. getting them to 6foot is the hard part. keep at it, you should see some rapid progress working on this.

Used a 56*, i don't feel consistent enough with 7i pitch and runs! Definitely emphasised where i can improve, pity my
club doesn't have a specific practice pitchinh area, only a par 3 course which can get busy!

I would probably use a 56 myself. pick a landing spot infront of the pin and let it release up to the pin.

I find the best short game practice is on the proper greens when you can find a nice quiet one all to yourself! this can be tricky sometimes all the same!

I know what you mean about the par3 course. we had one at our old place. as soon as the sun came out if was absolutely rammed!

Not many/any. I'd be happy if I was putting with my next shot on all 10 balls.
I think many people grossly over estimate their ability to stick it close from this sort of range, particularly mid/high handicappers.
The PGA tour stats on proximity to hole are enlightening.

Well said that man! Lot of people dreaming on here, anyone getting 2 inside 6 feet has done very well.

At a guess 1-2 with the rest being anywhere between 7 and 25ft however one may not even be within that range.

It's a difficult one as I'd rather be 75 yds away so I could use a full sand wedge
