One of my FCs in Saturdays comp was a 27 h'capper. He's a long time golfer so has a lot of experience but just has never been very good. Before I go any further, this is not a high vs low h'cap thread but playing with this guy did get me wondering how and why some people bother. I have honestly never witnessed so many reloads\provisionals from one person in one round in all my golfing life. Neither have I spent so much time in the rough looking for one person's ball(s). On just tee shots alone he had...

1st: Provisional
3rd: Provisional
4th: Reload
5th: Reload
6th: Reload x 2
9th: Provisional
10th: Reload
12th: Provisional
13th: Reload
14th: (Would have been a provisional but bounced of a tree)
15th: Reload
17th: Reload
18th: Provisional

It wasn't like the miss was in the same place either, it ranged from huge hooks to huge slices and various shots in between except for straight ones. Walking down the 12th with our friend playing his ball from somewhere near the 10th green my other FC commented that he didn't know how this guy managed to keep coming back out and I have to say I agree with him. It surely can't be any fun when you're that bad and have been for so long?

Maybe I am missing the whole point that golf is supposed to be fun but that really didn't seem like fun to me.

Yes I think you are missing the point

The guy obviously just enjoys being outside with friends and just having a go at the game and not really caring about his score.

Some people are far to wrapped up in trying to score well they miss the whole point of amateur golf - just enjoying playing with friends and other people. I play with an old guy who struggles to get the ball round but he still comes back every Friday to spend time with his friends and the banter he gets. He also enjoys watching "better" golfers hit the golf ball.

There are many ways to get enjoyment out of golf than just scoring well and playing well.

Plus 1 to this. Mind you as a 36 h'capper I've never been like that off the tee.

Why do you have to be of a certain standard to enjoy golf?

In case you missed it in the original post...

...this is not a high vs low h'cap thread...

The point is, it can't be much fun playing 3 off of every tee, spending half your time looking for your ball in wet clag and losing 12 balls a round.

Really tho ? im all for having fun and the freedom to do what you enjoy regarding your pastimes but when it starts affecting other peoples ability to do so aswell then its a problem , do you not think ?

If he was out with 2 mates and letting people (alot id say) play through then fair play to the guy , but IMO it could no way be fun to be playing golf for years and still be at that ability ..

Just my thoughts on it tho ..................

Again maybe the fun for him isn't in the actual golf more about the company - but I guess with the attitude towards him being displayed I'm guessing he may look elsewhere for better company and not people who will judge what is fun for him depending on his score.

I agree to an extent, although I bet he still very very rarely has those shots where he catches it just right and it fly's through the air in a perfect line and drops to within a couple of feet of the pin, or the drive that does go straight down the middle, or the bunker shot that flops out and roles up to the flag. It's those shots that we think, yeah! a pro would have been proud of that, which is what probably keeps some people coming back.

sound like my round last Saturday, apart from the tree bit;)

They must enjoy it and i suppose thats all that matters to them.

I would not want to be playing if i could not get to a decent standard, but each to their own .

What attitude towards him? This is nothing to do with his actual score or him as a person, he was a good guy, we had a laugh, it's more to do with the way it is compiled.

How is he affecting other people ability to do well ?

A lot of golf snobbery going on here

The attitude you are displaying towards him and you and your buddy talking about him.

So what if his score is complied badly - as long as he enjoyed himself then there should be no problem at all

Thought the same thing watching that Angelo(?) video with the worst avid golfer playing Sawgrass. I'd have taken up snooker a long time ago if after 10 years I was still struggling to carry the ball 50 yards!
