Hosepipe Ban!

With all the floods across the country that we are enduring, will we still see a hosepipe ban in the summer?

If we do, is that saying that we do not have enough reservoirs to catch all this water!

Should the South East or South West or somewhere in-between have something like Kielder Water to ensure that there is no water shortages not only for us as domestic and commercial users but also to support the environment in those areas also.

Can't remember last time a new reservoir was built for this part of the country... Early 70's would be my estimate... Yet the increase of dwellings must be in its hundreds of thousands plus... Can't keep adding homes without improving the infrastructure... Believe there is one in planning but the nimbys wont allow it...

Do I dare get involved in this debate as I work for one of the large water suppliers in the South!...............



Hell why not, the drought at the start of the year was due to the really dry winter in 2011 November through January didn't do any favours in filling aquifers and boreholes. But low and behold the rains gods stepped in and trounced us throughout 2012.

Millions is being spent on a Compulsory metering scheme in the South East, backed by DEFRA, OFWAT and the government in order to help show up leaks on supply pipes as well as getting people to be more careful with water. Yes this can mean people pay more on their bills until they get used to being on a meter, but this is why they have brought in phase in billing, to enable customers to pay reduced % of the bills for upto 2 years with the water company subsidising the rest. Also support tariffs for families on low incomes and another called Watersure for people with 3 or more children under 19 as well as other reasons that you can get this e.g medical etc.

Water levels now are filling to where they should be and should see us through the next 2-3 years without a ban, the issue of hosepipe bans is not the immediate impact on water resources but making sure there is enough over a prolonged 3-5year period for the properties supplied.

No fear of a hosepipe ban around Wyboston Lakes. 15th fairway is under about 3 foot of water..!!! I think the 16th par 3 has disappeared. Will be a while before it opens again me thinks.

Classic quote by somene that hasn't actually looked into the reasons for this to be done. Yes the greatest resource but we don't purify from rivers or seas... Reason being governments have to allow us to take the natural resource and they don't allow it.... As for them that can pay more well they are entitled to actually look at the reasons they're paying more and actually save water, thus saving them money... No Brainer that one... If you don't want to waste money, don't waste water...

Spot on that man, the very reason for the ban. Driest winters for a hell of a long time, up until this year the reservoirs, boreholes and aquifers have struggled to refill in the winters as they've been so dry

Every trial I have seen the results of has NEVER proved that metering actually saves water... Unless, of course, you can point me to a valid independent one that says otherwise ...

Metering is simply a measure to provide greater profits... Sorry, can't be convinced to see it otherwise ...

Not here to convince anyone, but the fact is the amount of supply pipe leaks detected by fitting meters has risen so that alone is saving water.

AS for profits, couldn't careless how much the firm I work for makes as long as I get paid at the end of the day
